I was a little nervous about Windows 8. I am replacing an XP machine, but have windows 7 at the office.

Setup took about 30 minutes, it found my wireless and configured it during the setup and wanted to create an MSN login. What they didn't tell you was that login username and password would be used not to access the web, but as the password for the new PC. I later removed it and it boots with no password at all, your choice.
Installing office 2010 took less than 10 minutes. I even configured outlook to POP 2 gmail accounts just using the setup wizard and started reading my mail, all in 10 minutes. There is an app on the start menu for mail as well if you don't have office or don't want to use Outlook.

The startup time on this PC is amazing. I thought it was pretty quick, so I decided to time it. Pressed the power button and in 14 seconds I could click on an Icon and by 20 seconds I was browsing the web. I then wondered if it had been in sleep mode, so I shut it down and started it up again, 14 seconds.

I found a windows 8 driver for my HP printer/scanner/copy machine which installed with no problems. Not as successful at installing my Canon software for my T1i camera. Found a version of zoom browser but it was for windows 7, and during the install it warned me this was the wrong operating system, but I accepted the error and continued on, but it only loads to 80% when I try to run it. There is a different app on the machine that found my camera and brought in all the photos easily, just not in separate dated folders like Zoom browser does. There may be a setting to change this.

The tower makes no sound at all. I have the fan facing my monitor in a temporary position and keep putting my hand in front of the fan to see if it is on. The Hard drive seems to be quiet as well, the DVD drive does make some noise, but nothing huge.

Windows 8 needs a few pointers to get started, like how to close a program (drag the top of a program to the bottom of the screen). How to switch to a new tab in Internet Explorer 10 (right mouse click in the window), how to shut down the computer (move the mouse to the top right of the screen, five icons appear on the right side, select the gear and then power). If you have a password setup, you have to press the space bar to get to the password entry screen, another feature, maybe?

I did have 15 updates to install after installing office, which took way longer than I wanted, may have been 30 minutes to install. I have since had another 3 updates, but they were much faster.

There is not a shutdown and install updates option. The options are shutdown or install and restart. I tried the shutdown and it is faster than 14 seconds, but it did not install the updates. I started back up and then selected install and restart. It installed the updates but then turned on, and I had to shut it down after that – a new Miscroslop feature…

Flash was not installed natively. The machine did come with a stripped down version of Cyberlink movie editing software, I think it is Media Suite 10, which wants you to buy their upgrade for some features, no idea how much, but I did create a short 12 minute movie and created a folder with .VOB files in just a few minutes without buying the upgrade. It also came with a 60 trial version of Norton. I need to remove this and install my anti-virus software, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I do consider myself to be well versed in operating systems as I work on computers all day, but I'm not a power user by any means, and definitely a bargain shopper. I do think 6 USB ports (4 back, 2 front) may be a little tight as you need 2 for mouse and keyboard, I also used 1 for a webcam. I'm pretty sure the 3.0 ports are all in the back…

I haven't tried the blue tooth yet.

Windows 8 is going to take a little getting used to, but I'll figure it out and take the startup speed over the old several minute boot time any time. As a side note, there is no bios information displayed or startup sounds made by the machine. With no password set, it doesn't show anything before displaying the start screen. I have not gone looking to see if I can turn on some of those features, but I won't miss them if I can't.

This is a average desktop computer. It was very easy to set up. It is for my own personal home use so it has more than enough bells & whistles. However it does not have an HDMI connector. I had to buy a monitor. My advise buy a decent monitor. This desktop was a good buy vs. buying a laptop. It really is a speed demon. It has Beats Audio hooked up to external speakers. The sound is great. It has both VGA and DVID connectors. It also lots of USB connectors for printers etc...
All in all a middle of the road computer.

Comments about HP Pavilion p7-1446s Desktop PC:

I had an HP computer back in 2006 and something happened to it. I could not run it any more. I decided to buy another up and coming machine and hated it from day one. My old machine is still looked for in the field. I had an opportunity to buy this computer on sale and, after reviewing the specs, I grabbed it. I am elated in my decision. This machine is by no means a gamer as it comes, but it does not bog down, and bottleneck, like my last brand. Out of the box, you can do most everything you like, with plenty of upgrade possibilities. Glad to be back!

computer was supposed to be delivered to my house by UPS. they came late each day, left noted, I left notes, instructing them to leave it in the management office, or a UPS office near my house. They ignored and put new notes on top of my note, no explanation why they didnt leave the computer, When I called, I was told that it was returnrd to the sender, somewhere in PA. When I called Stapples, I was told that It was not tehre. How could you sell a product that I had already bought?

I was concerned about Windows 8 after reading other reviews, but I found it easy to use. Having used the icons/apps on my smartphone, the tiles in Windows 8 seemed natural. Yeah, it took a little getting used to, but I'm talking minutes, not hours or days. The machine is super fast - a great improvement over my old Dell machine, although I have to say I liked the smaller footprint of the Dell unit, but that's my only "negative" comment. I'm having lots of fun exploring all the included software. It's a great machine - I made the right choice!

I am a graphic designer that uses the Adobe Creative Suite 6 on a daily basis. Mostly Photoshop and Illustrator. I bought this PC as an upgrade. After two month use, it's already proven that it's not powerful enough for what I need.It crashes programs frequently. This is mostly due to the terrible video card. I haven't tried it with gaming, but if it's this bad with Adobe CS6, it must be bad for gaming as well.

Since your exact model Dell screen is not listed, it is impossible to say for sure whether it will work with this desktop. However, screens that were made 6 years ago were typically either CRT monitors or flat screens, which practically all desktops have inputs for, so you should have no problem using your monitor with this desktop.
