Feb2009: We use our HP2840 daily. We print our own postcard mailings (there are 5926 people on our mailing list) 2 sided, along with seasonal flyers (in color). We bought the printer back in March of 2008 and have only recently replaced the imaging drum (the current drum still showing a full column on the indicator screen). We do a lot of copying and scanning, and print all of our own media packets and brochures. The cartridges & imaging drum are not cheap, however we find the lifetime of them very satisfactory and have been thrilled with the printer's quality.

Expensive to operate
I have used this product since April 2005 for a full spectrum of paper output -- pretty much everything HP envisioned (including rough paper! :-> ).

Through good bargaining and rebates, I was able to get the cost of the 2550N (the version with the JetDirect card) down to under $500.
Unfortunately, I have spent that much again in replacing toner cartridges, and very shortly the imaging drum cartridge (which costs exactly twice as much as two toner cartridges).
Note well: The drum cartridge life is 20,000 copies, and it is metered by a chip. That's already short in a world where laser drums are typically rated for 50,000 copies WITHOUT chipping. BUT, if you print in color, EACH COLOR counts as one copy, so a single sheet of color printing counts as FOUR COPIES on the chip!
This is whether or not the drum is actually worn out.
I will do the drum ONCE; it has lasted two years at the rate I make prints. Then, it will be time for a new laser printer.
Physically a good drum with good image, easy to replace. However, short life and high price drive people to use secondary manufacturers or refurbished.
I am so sorry I bought the printer and now I am stock. The toners are expensive but the drum is a joke and does not last 20000 blck and white copies nor 5000 color, that is a big lie. The copies are nice, but that machine is not practical
I purchase it because I need it, but if I had known how expensive the items were to make this printer useful I probably would have bought something else.
Toner cartridges & drum have MUCH SHORTER LIFESPAN than advertised and won't allow further printing even when there's toner remaining. Also, Staples doesn't stock the imaging drum in stores - this from a product purchased from Staples less than 2 years ago!
HP products are reliable, yields are exaggerated; no prior warning before the drum shuts down and won't let you continue your print outs. [...] Good thing I back this printer up with another printer.
