We bought this to transfer an old computer's contents onto to save to with my new computer without downloading everything onto the new computer. It was and is so easy to use. I just use it as an external hard drive with the old pictures and documents at my fingertips if I need them. I was afraid all my old documents and files were lost when I had problems with the old computer but the I/O magic USB Hard Drive took all the data and stored it perfectly. We may be buying another as a backup for my husbands computer.

This was purchased for the use of swapping out old IDE drives for me to work on other people's PCs. Instead, I find out that I may have to purchase another since this one is NOW being occupied by one of my old IDE drives which I use to boot the Linux system and enter the client's computer securely.

The first drive did not fit well at all. It was a bit thicker and was tough as nails to slide in. The result: the back panel snapped off, unplugging a contact. My luck, nothing was broken, but the panel is permanently unattached and is only secured when I place the screws in. ---(view image where my fingers are visible, pointing out the latch and lip that wouldn't have held the panel in the first place, but may have been glued)--- I shaved the internal connecting cables when they bent upwards, and had to force the back panel shut.

Booted, accessed the drive, found out what it was, everything was great, turned off, and TRIED to get the drive out. This I had to do by unscrewing the face plate (that blue-window-like design... there's no light illuminating that) and pushing the drive out. This is when I noticed a bit of an inward warp down the center of one of the enclosure. I bent it out then put the next one in.

The drive fit perfectly. After "warming" the connecting cable/wiring by rubbing them, I managed to mold it where it would flex better and not get shaved this time. Installation was much better. The other drive was obviously a behemoth since all other drives I have inserted had not given me issues, and I even tried again to get that first one in with horrible results.

Even though 5 out of 6 drives installed fine, the wiring... because this being internally IDE... and flimsy back panel make this convenient enclosure a "don't-swap-me-out-too-often" product. I believe the wear and tear on the connectors and wiring will quickly show itself after a few more installations. Obviously, since I can no longer PULL the back panel, but have to have the front panel open so I can PUSH the drive out.

I recommend this to most people who NEED to get information off a IDE drive (in other words, desperate), but want to warn those that do regular swaps to watch out for the wear, tear, and damage that they may incur. Be very very careful with the back panel. Until something more durable comes around (IDE to USB/SATA are hard to come by), this will have to do for now.

Comments about I/O Magic USB 2.0 Enclosure for 3.5" Hard Drive (I35USBEN):

My laptop was dead and valuable photos were on the hard drive. Staples recommended this enclosure. For what it is, I think it is pricey, however, well worth the years of pictures I could not access any other way. I was led to believe it work on a MAC, but it didn't. It may work on a MAC, I am just not that computer savvy to know how to do it. It was relatively easy to install.
