We bought this to transfer an old computer's contents onto to save to with my new computer without downloading everything onto the new computer. It was and is so easy to use. I just use it as an external hard drive with the old pictures and documents at my fingertips if I need them. I was afraid all my old documents and files were lost when I had problems with the old computer but the I/O magic USB Hard Drive took all the data and stored it perfectly. We may be buying another as a backup for my husbands computer.

This was purchased for the use of swapping out old IDE drives for me to work on other people's PCs. Instead, I find out that I may have to purchase another since this one is NOW being occupied by one of my old IDE drives which I use to boot the Linux system and enter the client's computer securely.

The first drive did not fit well at all. It was a bit thicker and was tough as nails to slide in. The result: the back panel snapped off, unplugging a contact. My luck, nothing was broken, but the panel is permanently unattached and is only secured when I place the screws in. ---(view image where my fingers are visible, pointing out the latch and lip that wouldn't have held the panel in the first place, but may have been glued)--- I shaved the internal connecting cables when they bent upwards, and had to force the back panel shut.

Booted, accessed the drive, found out what it was, everything was great, turned off, and TRIED to get the drive out. This I had to do by unscrewing the face plate (that blue-window-like design... there's no light illuminating that) and pushing the drive out. This is when I noticed a bit of an inward warp down the center of one of the enclosure. I bent it out then put the next one in.

The drive fit perfectly. After "warming" the connecting cable/wiring by rubbing them, I managed to mold it where it would flex better and not get shaved this time. Installation was much better. The other drive was obviously a behemoth since all other drives I have inserted had not given me issues, and I even tried again to get that first one in with horrible results.

Even though 5 out of 6 drives installed fine, the wiring... because this being internally IDE... and flimsy back panel make this convenient enclosure a "don't-swap-me-out-too-often" product. I believe the wear and tear on the connectors and wiring will quickly show itself after a few more installations. Obviously, since I can no longer PULL the back panel, but have to have the front panel open so I can PUSH the drive out.

I recommend this to most people who NEED to get information off a IDE drive (in other words, desperate), but want to warn those that do regular swaps to watch out for the wear, tear, and damage that they may incur. Be very very careful with the back panel. Until something more durable comes around (IDE to USB/SATA are hard to come by), this will have to do for now.

Workable solution for enclosing HD

Comments about I/O Magic USB 2.0 Enclosure for 3.5" Hard Drive:

Very intuitive to configure. All cables (power adapter, USB cable and internal connections) and requried screwdriver included. A good workable soltuion for attaching an internal 3.5" hard drive to your computer as an extneral drive.

The enclosure provided an easy solution for being able to access the data on a "raw" 3.5" hard drive.

The one downside I can say is that the case itself is manufactured fairly cheaply (although that doesn't dimish the functionality of the unit). I suppose that would be a problem if you dropped it or somethng. But in a pinch, spending $39.99 to get your data mounted on your comptuer is totally worth it.

Works with both PC and Mac formatted drives.

Comments about I/O Magic USB 2.0 Enclosure for 3.5" Hard Drive:

I bought this unit to use to copy data from several old Hard Drives. The Enclosure was easy to set up, to use and easy to change over between Hard Drives. The price was reasonable and it filled my need and should I need an External Drive I can just pop in a hard drive and be on my way.

Adequate but not much more

Comments about I/O Magic USB 2.0 Enclosure for 3.5" Hard Drive:

Bought this to replace a Seagate external drive that the AT&T installers damaged. It is very basic. Has only a visibile power light -- no indicator for data activitity. not much ventilation to disburse heat, and obviously not a fan. They did provide necessary connectors (power and data) for inserting either a SATA or IDE 3.5 drive, necessry drive mounting screws, a cute little Beijing-grade screwdriver which is totally worthless, and the bright chrome finish looks good.

Was surprised it was the only external USB enclosure stocked by the store. I would have preferred a more substantial unit -- one with fan and a data LED -- but it saved me having to go to the "BB" store located next door.

Comments about I/O Magic USB 2.0 Enclosure for 3.5" Hard Drive:

This was so easy! I had an old harddrive out of an old inoperable desktop and this was so easy to choose! The store had one of these in stock. So I picked one up and took it home with me. The instructions were clear and accurate. THe optional accessories were complete ( it is made to acomodate a couple of different haddrive configurations) and it went together just as described in the included instrictions! After putting this old harddrive in this enclosure I plugged it into my current desktop and it read almost immediately and Worked flawlessly.
