I use the product as a admin asst in a law firm. I scan text from cases at least one hour per day. I don't know what I would do without the USB pen but would certainly be a better typist :) This tool is just perfect for me and, I guess, anyone who needs to grab text from paper. I use it all the time yet could not start to explain how it works, it just does. We scan into Word Perfect. You scan scan anywhere you want. It is doing exactly the same as when you type it in manually except you don't have to do it anymore. As I said, nicely done and a good investment. I save a lot of time with it.

As I installed the IRIS Pen 6, I was bothered by the instruction to ignore all the Windows warnings that the software was not good for Windows. I took the companies word for it and installed it on my older XP computer.

After installing the software, they tell you to remove the CDROM and calibrate the pen. They do not tell you to start the software first! After overcoming that little problem. I got it to calibrate, but nothing happened for scanning. I thought maybe the XP was too old.

I installed it on my Vista Laptop. I tried scanning and after about 25 attempts with various angles and speeds only one scan came out close to 100%. The others were real gobbly goo. Then while still using it, my computer turned off. That scared me. I restarted it and deleted the software from it.

I went back to the XP and tried to get it to scan. It would not. I thought I would restart it to see if that might clear things up. It shut down, but would not restart! I tried to start in safe mode and couldn't. Then I tried the recovery disk. For 3-5 minutes nothing happened then I was given a choice of reformatting the hard drive losing everything and back to factory settings or "Quit". I hit "Quit" to try some other options. Then Windows just started up on its own. My friend said Windows can repair itself. I deleted the IRIS Software.

My computer appears to be OK now. This IRIS software is dangerous. The Windows warnings are for real. I'm lucky I got away with a functioning system for now. I hope it stays that way. If it were possible to rate this IRIS pen with a negative number I would.

Comments about IRIS IRISPen™ Express 6 Handheld Scanner:

Take some time to practice using your Iris pen. It is very helpful to calibrate it regularly, insuring accurate scanning. At first I was sceptical but over time I have come to find it extremely helpful. It is not restricted to one computer or user.

Comments about IRIS IRISPen™ Express 6 Handheld Scanner:

Apologies for the inconvenience Ronald63. The pen works well and it is easy to install and uninstall. Your situation is the first time I have ever heard of it "possibly causing" a system crash. The warning about the installation is "standard" for Windows in regards to any software company who do not pay Microsoft the premium to add an entry in the device driver to "validate" it. It will not nor should it not crash your system.

In regards to garbled text attempting the following should alleviate the problem. Delete the contents of the folder listed below:

          C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Application Data\IRISPen\Calibration
          C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\IRISPen\Calibration (Windows 7 32bit)

To display hidden files and folders
          1. Open Folder Options in Control Panel.

          • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
          • Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.

          2. On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
Please recalibrate your hardware on the blank/empty part of the paper by going to File > Reset Factory Settings, make sure that the "Reading Options" are set correctly ("Target" is set to active application and the "Scanning Mode" to single line - Executive Version).

Comments about IRIS IRISPen™ Express 6 Handheld Scanner:

I am a student and a frequent library goer. I stumbled across this technology on staples.com and saw it work at a trade show. I need to copy text from a lot of different books and magazines. A sheetfed scanner can't be used on books so I purchased an irispen and am absolutely fond of it. Why? Because I used to have to make copies of everything I needed to keep, use a yellow highlighter and waste a lot of paper.

                        A:

Amazingly, the IRISPen recognizes 128 different languages. All American and European languages are supported, including Central-European languages. Greek, Turkish, the Cyrillic ("Russian") and the Baltic languages and Hebrew are also supported. Optionally, the IRISPen reads Asian documents in Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean.

You can activate a mixed alphabet of Greek or Cyrillic and Western characters. This is useful if Western words pop up in Greek of Cyrillic texts (this is often the case with proper name, brand names, etc.). The IRISPen will automatically switch languages whenever needed.

The product does indeed work with Windows 7 and you might need to be a "local administrator" in order to do so.

In Windows Vista or 7 please disable your UAC program. It can be located by clicking on the windows logo and typing UAC in the search function of Windows 7. You should see a "Change User Account Settings" with a blue flag; click on it and set it to the bottom (disable). Restart your machine.

Left click on the windows logo again, left click on computer. In the new screen right click on the DvD-rom drive and select "open". Once in, right click on the blue bird and select "run as administrator". Install the program. Once the program has been installed, right click on the shortcut and adjust the compatibility to always run in "administrator mode" if applicable. Don't forget to reset your UAC to the default settings.

When the IRISPen software is running there will be the IRISPen in the taskbar. If it has a red diagonal line then the driver is not loaded correctly.
