This is a major upgrade to previous portable scanners simply because of the internal battery. My past experience with these devices were unreliable (driver compatibility issues). This was a real easy set up and I was immediately scanning after I charged it. Good quality scans. They finally got this device right!

I bought this scanner in hopes to cut down on my office flatbed scanning. I can't believe it! The scanner is totally portable and the document takes a sec to scan and easily loads to my computer. Saves me time and was a great price!

  The IRIS scanner does include the program or software needed. It is all fairly easy, the scanner copies the photo or document, then the scanned photo or document appears on the computer, and can be saved and shared.

how long will the batter typically stay charged?... not how many pages I can copy, but if I fully charge it and then need to drive to see a client for scanning say 5 sheets of paper, how many hours would it maintain a decent charge?

  You will be able to turn the scanner off for your drive and then turn it on once you need to use it. There is no idle power consumption for this because of the physical off switch.

  I was able to scan about 60 sheets of paper before I lost the charge. It comes with a mini-usb cable, which is has a regular usb at the other end. I found it charged best by plugging it directly into the wall with a USB plug- I suppose you could also charge it in your car that way also. Your bigger issue is going to be make sure you have a large enough flash drive or disk to hold the files as I have found they vary greatly.

  The hardware saves internal scans as jpeg only but you can use the accompaning ReadIRIS 12 to convert to PDF

  Unfortunately the maximum paper size one can scan - using the Anywhere 2 - is A4 (slightly longer then letter by .5") Within the software though, you can recognize legal size.
