This is by far the ccolest running, non-fan-cooled, external drive I have owned, and that includes popular Seagate and Western Digital models. "HD Tune Pro" HDD utility software reports max temperatures of about 40C under load, some 15-20C less than other non-fan cooled models. I expect lower operating temperatures to improve reliability. Time will tell--mine is only a couple of weeks old.

My Prestige includes a Seagate ST31000528AS drive, a quite, low power model. (Of course Iomega could change the contents at anytime.)

I use the Iomega Prestige 1TB external drive to backup photos and other data. While not a problem for backup and storage, this kit wiuth USB2 is slow. I'd want esata for a "working" drive. Mine writes at only about 60MB/hour.

Oddly, the power light remains on whenever the power to the drive is on, even if the computer is off and the drive has stopped running.

Installed and then download the Retrospect backup software HD 2.5. Worked OK for a few backups and then it failed repeatedly to read the backup images! A quick search on Google showed that this SW problem has existed for over 2 years and EMC never thought to fix it. Bottom line, the backups I made are now useless. Fortunately, I did not need the backups yet, I stripped the drive clean and returned it as fast as I could. Got a Seagate instead, which I have used with great results and their BK SW is solid and does NOT use a proprietary format (which is bad IMHO). Don't get fooled by the price...if you cannot read your backup, you've got nothing.

Probably work OK if you just need an external drive. However if their SW is lousy, do you want to roll the dice on their drive too?

Comments about Iomega Prestige 1TB External Hard Drive (charcoal):

This worked just fine right out of the box for me. (Windows Vista - using Windows Backup) My computer recognized the drive immediately and it was truly "plug and play" - nothing for me to do but turn on Windows Backup and let it do it's thing. I now set it to backup weekly in the middle of the night and it's all good. Best part is that there IS a power switch so you can turn it off when not in use (or scheduled to be in use) which I suspect will save on wear and tear.

I am in the market for a new computer, but I dont want to loose all of my photos and music including I-tunes can I back these up and download them onto the new computer with this? Sorry if I am asking a dumb question just not familier with external hard drives.

                  • A:

Yes this is the perfect solution to handle the task you wish to complete. Provided you do not have more than one terabyte of data to save. In which case you would need an additional drive, or a larger one. However, 1 Terabyte is generally far more than sufficient.

after the initial backup of a file or directory does this unit back up the entire amount of data previously stored or only what was changed?

                  • A:

Iomega Prestige 1TB External Hard Drive backs up data incrementally after the initial data set has been created. Only the data that has changed is backed up. Once every 90 days a new completed data set is created.

Nothing is mentioned about Linux support. I have an earlier, much smaller Iomega portable hard drive that fully supports Linux, even though that operating system goes unmentioned in their literature. I'm hoping this is the case with this external hard drive, as well; that it will, indeed, operate with Linux.
