Comments about Jackson® Forged Steel Double Face Sledge Hammer, 6 in (L), 6 lb Head, 36 in (L) Handle:

Works as it should. Fully made in the USA (head and handle). Wood handle does a good job of absorbing impact but you definitely need gloves. No overstrike protection; need to purchase and add on ($4 extra)

Lightest category of sledge hammer with 3' handle so much easier to wield than the 8+ lb sledges which cause a lot more strain to lift over your head. If you are not used swinging sledge hammers or don't need to do it very often or need it more to pound things in rather than break stuff up, I would recommend a 6lb vs 8+lb. If you can handle it, get the 8lb version of the same sledge but leave the 8+ ones for the pros or if you want it to workout with a tire as opposed to house or yard work. If you are looking to deliver the most amount of energy onto something, you get more for your buck by speeding up smaller object than barely being able to move a heavier object; plus it is less likely that you will strain your elbows and wrists if you don't have perfect technique.

You get a lot more control with this lighter sledge pounding in spikes and wedges and if you use it inside the house, it is a lot less likely that you will break something you are not supposed to (it is funny to watch DIYers on TV struggling 12 and 16lb sledges inside the house! Why? a 6lb sledge can break up just about anything and you save yourself the strain). I used to drive in a wedge at multiple places to split a stump before prying it out; worked really well mainly because of its light weight - with the long handle, most of the energy delivered comes from the speed with which you can bring it down. Broke up large pieces of stone, tile and concrete waste 3" thick with minimal effort; 6" thick chunks took a lot more effort but worked if hit at the right angles. I tried pounding a 2' thick waste chuck of concrete and stone ... no luck, after multiple poundings, it just chips off but I don't want to rent a jackhammer and you have to pay someone to take these huge chunks of concrete leftovers so I am going to try to continue using it to chip away at the big pieces until they are rubble and then I can use that as drainage or fill if not, I will just bury it deep. Definitely a workout either way.

Price wise, it is not very competitive so that's the only loss of a star. With an overstrike protector, you are looking at almost $30 with taxes; it is about $8 less with the competition but if you have a coupon, it works out buying it at Staples plus free delivery so that's nice. Sledges whose head is not made in the US are a few dollars less (like the Pony or Razorback).
