I bought the Windows 7 version of this laptop back in August (everything else about it is identical) and I installed the Windows 8 upgrade online to it after using it with Windows 7 for several months.

It was a solid computer right out of the box and it has been running Windows 8 beautifully since the upgrade. I love the new OS (after a day or two of getting accustomed to it) and plan to purchase another one for my wife tomorrow with Windows 8 pre-installed.

I use the computer with a mouse because I can't stand touchpads and always have it plugged in so really don't have much feedback on the battery.
I can honestly say however that I've been very impressed with how well it has run anything I have thrown at it. It runs World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Diablo 3, Saints Row 3, and about a dozen or so Steam games with no frame rate or lag at all, even through the wireless adapter for internet.

If there are any negatives to note, they are minor. It is only a 15" screen, and therefore the max resolution it uses is limited to 1366x768 which is considered "low-resolution" for most games. It hasn't really stopped me from playing anything, just could be a little better.

The HDMI output and USB 3.0 ports have worked great and the speaker performance is loud for a laptop, although I wouldn't describe it as anything epic. I would still call them above average for a laptop.

The built-in Veri-Face webcam facial recognition software for logging in is pretty accurate, but also still feels gimmicky and unnecessary. It's still slower than simply typing in your password at login and requires adequate lighting to work well.

The touchpad does tend to get annoying if left enabled when using the keyboard as I bump it with my wrist and it moves my cursor out of text boxes, but I don't use the touchpad normally so I just have to press the quick key to disable it once each time I boot the laptop.

Lenovo (formerly IBM) builds solid computers with quality parts and drivers and stands out above its competition. I would highly recommend this over an HP or Dell simply because of the better component and software/drivers. I tried buying an HP yesterday that had better specifications than this computer and had a terrible experience to the point that I am returning it tomorrow to exchange for another Lenovo Z580.

This computer was purchased for business use. Upon trying to set it up, I experienced the "blue screen of death" and called Lenovo. After restoring computer to original state failed to fix problem, I agreed to ship it to Lenovo for repair. I was promised I would get computer back in 7 days. After 2 weeks, I still do not have the computer. Trying to get useful information from customer service is futile and frustrating. No one can tell me what is being done or when I can expect the computer returned. The website status is not kept up to date and is more misleading than helpful. I have been satisfied with Lenovo ThinkPads in the past but I will never buy another Lenovo computer based on this ordeal!

Comments about Lenovo Ideapad Z580-59345254 15.6" Laptop:

My husband had been wanting to get rid of my desktop for over 5 years, but I wasn't ready to convert to a laptop. They say the laptops are good for 2 years, then need an upgrade. I didn't want to got through that every two years. I got to meetings and presentations for my business. I started seeing everyone with a laptop, Ipads and Tablets. I was the only one writing notes on paper. I finally realized I needed a laptop. When I get documents on my phone, I can't realy see everything and having a laptop, I could see everything, and I didn't ned to wait until I got home. This laptop has everything, I have been looking for. I love 10 key, my fingers are too small for the top key. The touch of the keyboard is raised not flushed. Is light and easy to use.

Worst mousepad I've ever seen. Needs a mouse. They should not have made the mouse buttons touch sensitive because that makes the mouse jump when you try to click on something. They also made it so giant it gets in the way whenever you want to type. Do not buy this unless you are prepared to never use that useless touchpad.

Comments about Lenovo Ideapad Z580-59345254 15.6" Laptop:

I fell in love with this machine the instant I took it out of the box. The brushed metal finish looks amazing, and feels very high-end to the touch. It's cold to the touch like metal, but I think there's plastic involved somewhere.

Upon turning this bad-boy on, I felt the speed difference between it and an i3, A6-8 processored machine. The fact that it includes 8GB of DR3 memory running at 1600Mhz Dual Channel is by far one of the best pluses. Intel's new 4000 series integrated graphics are GREATLY improved over the 3000 series. I can run WoW at next to highest settings with 30FPS, acceptable for everything except perhaps raids. (I do however have a good chillmat underneath)

The sound on this thing is outstanding. The included amplification and equalization software makes listening even to YouTube a pleasant experience.

The only complaint I have is regarding the Recovery disk options included with the new Lenovo lines. There is no longer the option to create your own DVD's for a full system restore, built into the machine. You can either create a system partition backup with the included OneKey software, or use Windows 8 to back up the recovery partition and hope that it works on a clean hard drive. The catch is, using Win8 factory restore backup option REQUIRES a USB Flash Drive or other USB device that can hold at least 20GB of information. The website (and application) says 16GB, but that is not true. I've tried, and it hangs at 16. (It needs that extra 4 to complete)

All in all a great computer. The only reason I'm not too upset about the whole recovery option is, 1. The computer doesn't really come with anything that isn't already backed up on the "D" partition by default. (Drivers, and programs)
      2. The computer only comes with Windows 8, not Windows 8 Pro edition. So I would be interested in buying an OEM just to have that - since it costs about as much as an upgrade disk.

Comments about Lenovo Ideapad Z580-59345254 15.6" Laptop:

I just purchased this computer after my Toshiba's hard drive burnt up in just over a year. I searched among a lot of computers and came across this one. I am not the biggest fan of Windows 8 but it is slowly growing on me. The only thing I must say I do not like at all about this computer is the touch pad. Its large which is nice but it doesn't have per say buttons so sometimes it has a mind of its own or does things when you don't want it to. The left click button sometimes acts up. But overall the computer is fast. If you can get past the touch pad learning curve and sensitivity. I haven't decided if this is a keeper yet or not but I will try it out a bit longer with the touch pad.

      • Q:

I have kept my laptop plugged in since I received it right around Christmas 2012. When I hover over the batter symbol it says 88% available (Plugged in, not charging) is this normal or is there a possible issue with the battery or power cord?
Asked on 1/24/2013 by Lisa Marcoux from Roxboro, NC

        2 answers

        • A:

I don't know if 88% is correct, but Lenovo has a energy management application built in. If you open this Lenovo power management application, it allows you to select "Optimize for run time" or "Best Battery Health". When "Best Battery Health" is selected, and the laptop is connected to AC power, the battery is allowed to discharge partially. On my Z570 laptop, it discharges to 49% and stays there. When the cursor is placed over the tray icon, it says "49% available - plugged in, not charging" and stays at 49% as long as it is plugged in. This prevents overheating of the battery. Choosing "Optimize for run time" allows the battery to charge to 100%. I wish my Toshiba laptop had this feature.

Answered on 3/16/2013 by Z570 owner from Fairfax, VA
        • A:

There are numerous reasons why this could be happening -a bad battery, bad cord, overcharging, BIOS update may be needed, battery may need to be re-calibrated... Your best bet, especially since you just received the computer is to contact the manufacturer and take advantage of your warranty - it may be a simple problem but you may be able to get a brand new battery if yours is defective, but do it while the machine is under warranty!
