I currently have a Brighthouse ubee cable modem/router with wireless capability rated for gigabit transfers and is cranking at about 85Mbps using hardwired Ethernet I do not use wireless. I had an additional set of Linksys routers between it and my PC's but the router were older and only selected to 10/100 speeds (fast Ethernet but not gigabit). Therefore I was not getting my potential gigabit speeds. I was going to replace my routers with new Linksys gigabit rated routers.

After doing some research and because I was only going to use hardwire line connections it seemed to be a waste to pay for wireless capabilities that I already had on the providers modem/router. I was not going to use and already had if I wanted to use it on the Brighthouse ubee equipment. I personally have no need for wireless and they are slower and less secure. However, the Linksys gigabit router also has this cloud thing that stores your router info and this cloud is how secure? I have read a lot of dislike for this on other reviews.

Well, this Linksys SE2500 5-port did the trick for me at half the cost and no interference to my speed or privacy. I have 2 of these in parallel to my cable modem/router so I can have more devices connecter to them. I have been able to obtain the same transfer rates with these devices as I get connecting directly to the cable modem/router. I'm getting about 85Mbps hardwired.

I would recommend this to anybody who has no need for wireless at this time. Also, if I wanted wireless capabilities I would use the existing one with my Brighthouse ubee cable modem/router.

I purchased the Linksys SE2500 switch at my local Staples store to hardwire my home entertainment components together and then run one CAT6 cable to my router. The activity lights are on the back, which I like and can be turned on or off. This way I go not get a "light show" from the shelving in my entertainment center.

The matte black plastic casing is nice as well. It does not show dust and wear (scratches) like the glossy casing many other consumer-grade switches have.

Opening up the switch does void your warranty, but I did it anyway since I wanted to see what was inside being the techie I am. The SE2500 is powered by a Broadcom BCM53125 chipset (see www.broadcom.com/products/Switching/Home-and-Small-Business/BCM53125 ), which has a thin thermal pad adhered to it to keep it cool. Not a full-fledge heat sink like in D-Link's DGS-1005G (ver.B2), but a thermal pad is better than nothing.

Compared to other consumer-grade gigabit switches, a one year warranty is kind of short; especially at an MSRP of $54.99. I would expect at least a three year manufacture warranty at the price point Linksys has the SE2500 listed at. This is the prime reason I am taking away two stars from my rating. Otherwise, it is a good buy, even though it is overpriced.

Comments about Linksys SE2500 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch:

This is designed to help expand the Internet wired capabilities in my house and it works quite well without fuss. I trust this manufacturer pretty well for splitters and so on. I have not had such luck with Linksys and routers but they all interact pretty well. No problems
