The Logitech Wireless Trackball M570 is the long-awaiting successor to my absolute favorite pointing device: the Logitech Cordless TrackMan Wheel. I own *four* of these older trackball-based "mice" and have spent literally 1000's -- maybe 10s of 1000's -- of hours using the M570's predecessor, and so consider myself well versed in trackballs. The new M570 works incrementally better in all regards to the old TrackMan. It tracks more accurately, the trackball has a lower mass and is therefore easier to control, the battery life is INSANE (547 days), and the addition of the two programmable Forward/Back buttons are a nice touch. The wireless USB adapter is almost invisible, it's so small. This is also a welcome change from the huge half-moon controller of it's grandfather. This will be the primary pointing device I purchase from this point forward. While it may not be worth disposing of my currently operational TrackMans (TrackMen?), once they do rest in piece, replacement M570 trackballs will be immediately shipped to me from Staples.

I recently purchased this mouse to replace my desk corded mouse. I am a CAD designer so I need a mouse to select and zoom minor details on my computer. I figured the ball will be better since it won't put any pressure on my wrist. First thing is the ball can never match the laser mouse - period. Since the traditional mouse is moving left-right and top-down, it is easier to pick a small detail on the planar screen. However on this mouse, you are moving a small ball - so it is difficult to precisely place it anywhere close to what you can get from a laser mouse. Also since the mouse moves with your thumb, you have to have a very good controllability to select any minor detail. It would have been a little better if the ball was a little bigger. The mouse can grow too. My palm is almost average sized but I still have difficulty grasping the mouse.

Comments about Logitech Wireless Trackball M570:

This trackball does OK, but it's not as easy to use as I had expected it to be. Took quite a bit of adjustment to slow the cursor down to the point that I could keep it pointed at what I wanted it to point at. Younger fingers might find it easier to use than I have. I may be going back to a basic wireless mouse.

So if I understand correctly you must connect this to a USB connection ,so it's not totally wireless. I'm looking for a totally wireless trackball for my Mac with the same for a Keyboard.
Asked on 3/11/2012 by Anonymous from Fall River MA

              1 answer

              • A:

There is no wire between the trackball and your Mac. There is a small receiver that needs to be plugged into a USB port. (If you buy a compatible wireless keyboard, it'll also use the same receiver.)

The Logitech Wireless Trackball M570 uses a standard AA battery. The cost is under $1.00 and the battery will last about 18 months.

              Hi all,

I'm new to the programmable mouse idea. I have a older laptop (Precision M90) that has a 3 button mouse. I have been spoiled by this darn middle button. It's programmed as a one click open in new tab button. None of the right click scroll over to the open new tab in the little menu has to be done! It's extremely helpful. I need a new laptop (this thing is too heavy) but have been resistant since no new ones that I have seen have 3 buttons. Then I remembered that programmable mouses exist. (Woohoo)

So my question is, can this mouse be programmed for a button to do the one click open new tab? Thanks in advance.

my only question is, in spite of the great battery life claimed by the mfr, is this a trackball i can just toss in my laptop bag without fear of it draining from inadvertent button presses? is there an 'off' switch? should i even be concerned?

There is an on/off switch on the bottom of it - just flick it over when not in use, and no worries at all. :)

It also has a storage space for the USB adapter next to the battery that works great when I am putting the laptop into a tight sleeve - then I don't worry about it at all, and I know I won't lose it.

This is a new model of the trackball. It connects with a miniature USB connector that is small enough to kept in a notebook's USB slot; it also, when it isn't in use, can be stored in the body of the trackball. It works with both Vista and Windows 7.

Yes, the M570 connects via a super-tiny USB wireless adapter. The USB adapter is automatically recognized by Windows XP and Windows 7.

For added control over the pointing device, download SetPoint from the Logitech website.
