Comments about NETGEAR Centria WNDR4700-100NAS N900 802.11 b/g/n Wireless N Dual Band Wireless Router:

It is about time that Netgear got a Qualcomm Atheros-based N900 router to market. While Netgear has offered the WNDR4500 N900 model, which runs off Broadcom chips, the overall performance in rate / range was iffy. In addition, the initial few firmware releases with the WNDR4500 had power saving link rate issues on the 2.4 GHz radio. My look at the WNDR4700 is looking at the unit as a wireless router and NOT taking into account the storage features, as I use dedicated NAS. The Netgear ReadyNAS Duo v2 to be exact.

The size of the unit is similar to the Netgear R6300 and R6200 units. It has one orientation and no way to be wall mounted like with the WNDR4300 or previous WNDR3800, WNDR3700 models. For me, this really is not an issue. In terms of the design of the router's case… it is appealing to the eye, but the full glossy body gets on my nerves. I have written to Netgear about the glossy bodies of their consumer routers over the past few years and never once gotten a reply to even say, "We appreciate your feedback." The glossy body shows fingerprints and dust easily. I wish Netgear would take feedback like Canon did when they removed the glossy body on their all-in-one printer MG8120 when the released the successor the Canon MG8220 which has a nice matte black body to the unit.

Aesthetics aside, the WNDR4700 has two Qualcomm Atheros AR9380 chips inside. One for the 2.4Ghz radio and one for the 5GHZ radio. The nice thing with the AR9380 is that it takes advantage of SST3 (Signal Sustain Technoloty-3), which helps to boost and sustain stronger signal strengths over a wider areas compared to previous generation wireless-N chips. I will confirm this as I have never gotten stronger 2.4GHz or 5 GHz (which tends to be weak anyway) signal strengths from a wireless-n router.

Another plus, especially for heavy downloaders and gamers, is this router supports more than 29,000 maximum simultaneous connections. Even the new Netgear R6300 802.11ac router only supports 4,096 maximum simultaneous connections. However, I am still not sure about the main network processor in this router. It is an Applied Micro APM82181 chip. I have never seen an Applied Micro chip in a router before. It has come cross by desk in NAS devices, but never in a router. I assume Netgear went with the APM82181 chip to help with the storage features performance of this router, which I really do not care about. However, the chip does seem to do a good job so far with the functions I use. It runs at 1GHz, which to my knowledge would be the fastest in Netgear's consumer line-up.

I am a tough grader when it comes to wireless routers. Never have I given a perfect score to a router. This however comes close. Is the price point high if all you want is the router and not the option of storage? Yes. I wish they had the WNDR4700 router hardware in the WNDR4500 case instead of the Broadcom. Overall, a good buy.

  • Q:

What is the range of this router
    Asked on 11/7/2012 by Donn

    1 answer

    • A:

Because wireless N routers have two(2) or three(3) specifically designed to maximize Wi-Fi range they provide an excellent wi-fi signal, in typical usage exceeding 700 feet. So you can expect this router to fall in that range. However the actual range of a wireless router will vary substantially depending on environmental conditions, such as obstructions and radio signal interference.
