I consulted with the help desk at the Staples in Alamogordo NM inquiring if this gear would do what I needed. I have a detached building that does not have internet, phone, and is too far from my wireless router. It is electrically connected to the master panel on the house. The agent said that this unit would work. I took a chance on it as we have no Staples in Roswell NM so it would be a long drive back if it failed to work. I plugged the Ethernet cable in my modem, the other end in the first unit and plugged it in the wall. This was the hard part, finding a spare outlet near the computer. The form factor takes up a lot of outlet space, and you are not supposed to plug it into a power strip probably due to the filtering in the strip. Then I went out to my shop and plugged the other unit into an outlet and connected the ethernet between the unit and my PC laptop. (I use Mac mostly but my other Mac is in storage, so to test it I used the PC) This was the other hard part, convincing Win XP that there was internet. After I beat the PC into submission the NetGear Powerline AV 200 works perfectly. I now have internet in my electronics and wood shop!!

I have the two power line adapters connected into two rooms rather far away from each other, and the signal strength between the two is very weak. Could be that they are on separate power phases, I cannot tell. As a result the performance is pretty low, and is impacted by electrical noise. (When I turn on a fan nearby it stops working). If I connect them to outlets in the same room, the performance is quite good, so it seems the performance depends a lot on the house wiring.

Comments about NETGEAR Powerline 200Mbps Adapter Starter Kit:

Love the product and saved me tens of hours from having to setup an ethernet line from the back of my client's store to the front. The modem & router was setup in the back but because of the distance to the front of the store, Wi-Fi had a weak signal and kept dropping connection. I setup NETGEAR Powerline in the back and one in the front. Now the front Point-of-Sale system has access to internet. I love how it's plug in play and you don't need to do any configuration whatsoever. This product saved me time and money.

These are great if you have a computer or TV you need to connect but it's not wireless. For me I have my wireless computer hooked to it because with an Ethernet cable it works faster and a non-smart TV hooked to the other. I've had it for 3 weeks now without any issues.

    Solution for poor wireless connection

Comments about NETGEAR Powerline 200Mbps Adapter Starter Kit:

I bought the 200Mbps Netgear because we have only 12Mbps internet (fastest available at this time for our location) - no point in buying one that offers faster speeds. I checked the speed we are getting with this Netgear using speedtest.net and we're getting 12Mbps.

We have a computer at the other end of the house from the router and on the lower floor, so the wireless connection wasn't very good or dependable. A powerline adapter is a good solution to this situation. The Powerline LED on our Netgear is red (indicating the slowest connection) because the two units are so far from each other, but moving the computer is not an option - and since we're getting 12Mbps, it doesn't matter.

Comments about NETGEAR Powerline 200Mbps Adapter Starter Kit:

frustrated with hooking up a neo-post postage meter I sought out a solution at Staples and found a clerk who knew how to solve the problem. He suggested the above product and it did the trick! Originally I was sent a modem to hook up that was to solve the inability of plugging in a router type cable to an old style phone jack outlet. How do you plug a router cable into a USB port on a modem! Neo-post never responded to that question after two or three phone calls so it was up to somebody else to figure out.
