Our strong wireless internet reception is reliable in most of the house except for the living room where it's glitchy when people walk by. So, we decided to try a Powerline connection instead. The only type that's fast enough to stream full 1080p HD video is the 500Mbps range such as this Netgear AV500. It's also true that old house wiring, AFCI breakers, cellphone chargers left plugged in when not in use, surge protector/power strips, and other things can reduce the speed or quality of a powerline network. Anyway, our house is 10 years old with none of those problems, and the PC is located about 30 feet from the power outlet where the router is (one room away). Have tested our internet speed several times over the last few days and we are now getting the same speed in the living room as we do on wired ethernet connections right beside the router - around 22Mbps (except during busy times when Comcast throttles everyone's speed down to about 9.5Mbps). So, the powerline connection is a success and seems very stable. Hope it lasts for years! Hookup was simple. First, we unplugged the USB wireless adapter from our living room pc. Then, plug in one Netgear powerline adapter to a power outlet near the router and connect them together with the supplied ethernet cable (about 6 feet long). Then, plug in the other adapter to a power outlet near our home theater pc in the living room, and use the other supplied ethernet cable to connect the pc's network jack to the Netgear adapter. We did not get an instant connection. Restarted the living room pc and, after it booted up and settled down, the connection was working at full speed! Pretty easy overall. One more thing - Staples.com matched a lower price we found from an online competitor. Thanks, Staples!

Max throughput I got was 24 Mbps as opposed to the 500 Mbps advertised. The devices were plugged in on same circuit and within 0 feet of each other. This one is going back to Staples.

I have 4 year old Linksys powerline devices that give my 65 Mbps (advertised: 85 Mbps) on the same exact test.

Comments about NETGEAR Powerline 500Mbps Adapter (XAVB5201):

Did what I needed. I had an ATT microcell for our cell phones and where our internet modem had to be, we couldn't register to the satellite, so being able to move the micro cell to where we needed it, was fantastic. Didn't know something like this existed.

Comments about NETGEAR Powerline 500Mbps Adapter (XAVB5201):

I needed a way to have a direct ethernet cable to my Access Point without running a cable around the corners and throught the stairs on the last floor of the house. Because the ethernet port is located in the backside of the floor I was thinking to install an Access Point in the very center to cover all that space and problably the next level and lucky for me there was an outlet perfectly located where I need it. I'm very happy with the results and I'm also thinking to do the same in the basement and in the backyard.

Great for wired devices

Comments about NETGEAR Powerline 500Mbps Adapter (XAVB5201):

Fast access to your local network and Internet.
Easy setup and fits with existing devices.
I always get the Netgear devices and they have gotten smaller every time.
Love these devices.
If you have broadband faster than what your wireless can provide for desktop computers these devices give the extra speed needed.
