Our strong wireless internet reception is reliable in most of the house except for the living room where it's glitchy when people walk by. So, we decided to try a Powerline connection instead. The only type that's fast enough to stream full 1080p HD video is the 500Mbps range such as this Netgear AV500. It's also true that old house wiring, AFCI breakers, cellphone chargers left plugged in when not in use, surge protector/power strips, and other things can reduce the speed or quality of a powerline network. Anyway, our house is 10 years old with none of those problems, and the PC is located about 30 feet from the power outlet where the router is (one room away). Have tested our internet speed several times over the last few days and we are now getting the same speed in the living room as we do on wired ethernet connections right beside the router - around 22Mbps (except during busy times when Comcast throttles everyone's speed down to about 9.5Mbps). So, the powerline connection is a success and seems very stable. Hope it lasts for years! Hookup was simple. First, we unplugged the USB wireless adapter from our living room pc. Then, plug in one Netgear powerline adapter to a power outlet near the router and connect them together with the supplied ethernet cable (about 6 feet long). Then, plug in the other adapter to a power outlet near our home theater pc in the living room, and use the other supplied ethernet cable to connect the pc's network jack to the Netgear adapter. We did not get an instant connection. Restarted the living room pc and, after it booted up and settled down, the connection was working at full speed! Pretty easy overall. One more thing - Staples.com matched a lower price we found from an online competitor. Thanks, Staples!

Max throughput I got was 24 Mbps as opposed to the 500 Mbps advertised. The devices were plugged in on same circuit and within 0 feet of each other. This one is going back to Staples.

I have 4 year old Linksys powerline devices that give my 65 Mbps (advertised: 85 Mbps) on the same exact test.

This little adapter solved my wi-fi problem in minutes. It's a snap to set up, and it works like a charm through the unit's wiring system.

Comments about NETGEAR Powerline 500Mbps Adapter XAVB5201:

I bought this device because the WIFI reception in my office is horrible. It was on sale for $69.99. I also believed this "adapter" would not work, because few devices with hype ever do. I thought I would give it a last chance trial, keeping all of the packaging and the receipts because I knew that I would be returning it. The performance blew me away. I made the connection downstairs, connected the CAT 5 wire, and immediately, the connection was like a direct hard-wire connect to my FIOS router. I still can't believe this thing works as advertised. I am thinking about buying another one.

Comments about NETGEAR Powerline 500Mbps Adapter XAVB5201:

I am sure it's not the products fault, I was trying to use it between 2 buildings on our property. Did not make a link, did not waste any more time testing it and just ran a wire instead. It probably works OK INSIDE of a house or at less of a distance but there is no max distances mentioned on the box anywhere, I knew it was hit or miss. Physically it appears to be a well built unit and includes both sender and receiver and cables so you are good to go right out of the box.

        EASY TO INSTALL POWERLINE ADAPTERS

Comments about NETGEAR Powerline 500Mbps Adapter XAVB5201:

These Netgear Powerline Adapters are nearly foolproof and easy to install. However - Netgear has only made the adapters available in sets of two with matching ethernet 6.5' cables. That is expensive if you only want one, three, or five adapters. And longer ethernet cables, if needed, are not cheap.
