When this works as it is supposed to, it is a joy. However, I can't get through a day without something going haywire. You go to type a note, and suddenly when you touch a letter, a string of letters appear. Hitting the backspace may give you even more letters. I've had mine for almost 4 months, and, after reading a few hours, when I try to turn a page, it won't turn.
If you touch a word to get one menu screen, you may get a different menu screen. Repeatedly. Or, the word menu screen (highlight, note, look up, etc.)won't come on--or a word will suddenly highlight when you don't want it to. A reboot takes care of all and any of these problems, but they are a pain to me.
Also, beware of too much highlighting or making notes. If you do these too much, the book file will be corrupted and you can't read it any more. It took me 2 months to find a tech support person who showed me how to get books back on my device. These were books that wouldn't open because I had highlighted too much. I don't know how much is too much, nor could they tell me.
I am a real techie, having had my 1st computer in 1978. I own an iPhone, and about any other electronic gadget on the market, and have never had any as buggy as this.
Maybe the newer models are more reliable.
I have to admit that, flaws and all, I still like this a lot better than the Kindle or Sony e-reader. I appreciate the tablet features on this and I like the apps. I didn't need an iPad because I already have the iPhone, but the apps on this are perfect for readers. Also, this is less than half what an iPad would cost.
I am high partial legally blind, but with good usable tunnel vision in one eye. Because I cannot drive, and because I love to read, carrying 2 or more books everywhere I go, can get heavy! I didn't think I'd like an e-reader, but I am loving it! Also, when my good eye is tired, I can enlarge the font, often change to block letters (I HATE Times New Roman) ... So far I haven't loaded music, but I HAVE loaded the Olive Tree app and one other.
The nook color has a tendency to fleeze on you, where you don't have access to anything, not even your e-books. But you can always reboot it and get a fresh start. It's still a good device to buy.
I am a very busy person that loves to read. I own a netbook, blackberry smartphone and a xoom tablet. The nook is perfect for reading in bed, on the couch, on my breaks at work because it is lightweight, small, with a long battery life!
Yes, the Nook Color is not a cell phone and does not have 3G/4G service, so if you have WiFi in Japan you can use it in Japan just as you would in the United States.

Sharing books on ereaders is a challenge, Nook books can be shared with another Nook reader, among family and friends, each book a single time, for 14 days. Sharing is between two like devices and there are limits to what can be freely shared, so sharing between a Nook and a Kindle doesn't work.

Q:
Is there some place I can compare Nook Color with Nook Tablet. Also If barnes and Noble goes out of business will the Nooks still work.
Below is a website that explains the differences between the two. As far as Barnes & Noble going out of business it seems very unlikely. The devices would still be operational. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/compare-nook-tablet-vs-kindle-fire/379003173/

Q:
I need to load reference material as PDF files. How easy is it to organize and find the files that I need?
The NOOK® Color supports the upload of PDF files and a drag-n-drop interface for moving files around on the eReader. So it's pretty easy to find and organize files on the device.

You would be able view pictures if you load a micro USB card onto your nook. However you would not be able to use a USB card reader with this particular product as it will not recognize it when you connect to the nook.
No, you will not be able to edit a microsoft word document.

A:
There is an app with all the main Microsoft Office products on it, Word included, of course. Buy that for about $14.99 and then you can edit, create, save, whatever you normally do with Word on your PC.

Q:
How are you able to read audiobooks on the Nook Color?
Providing the audio books are in MP3 format, you will be able to listen to audio books on the Nook Color. To listen to an audio book it will use the same application as listening to music on your Nook. However, you will not be able to follow along with the book while listening, as you are only able to use one application at a time.
