I am an avid reader and I usually read in bed at night. My wife has to be up very early so she's trying to sleep while I'm reading. I was previously using a Nook Simple Touch without the glowlight and an M-Edge reading light. It was a good combination, but even on the lowest setting the reading light would create enough ambient light in the room to disturb my wife's sleep. I thought about getting the glowlight Nook but heard about the Kindle Paperwhite and decided to wait until I could try them both.

I bought a Kindle Paperwhite at the same time as the Nook Glowlight and tested both for about 2 weeks. In the end, I decided on returning the Kindle and keeping the Nook. There are a few major reasons why.

First, the screen on the Nook is better even though you can easily see the light source at the top. It has a more pleasant color tone for reading at night and other than the lighted spots at the top, the rest of the screen is very even. Not so on the Kindle Paperwhite. It has uneven greenish colored blotches all over the screen which completely detract from your reading experience. I've read reviews of others who said they didn't have this problem, but there are many more which say they see the spots. Also, the lack of physical buttons on the Kindle was a big mistake. The touch screen works wonderfully, but sometimes it's nice just being able to hold the Nook in one hand and barely move your thumb to make page turns. Getting books on both devices is very easy with a wifi connection or through USB on your computer. I tend to borrow more books from the library than purchase and you just browse your local library website on the computer, then hook up the Nook to transfer files over USB. The Kindle is slightly easier because you can send most library books wirelessly by pushing a "send to Kindle" button after being redirected from your local library's Overdrive site. Battery life on both devices is excellent and almost to the point where you simply don't have to think about it. Just charge the device every few weeks and you'll never have it die on you. Finally, the Nook has the ability to be rooted. For many people, this is a non issue but for me it clinched the win for the Nook. Underneath the Barnes and Noble operating system lies a competent Android tablet that can be unleashed to be much more than just an eReader. You can browse the web, install games like crossword puzzles, try different eReading apps (including Amazon's Kindle App), and much more.

In the end, these are both excellent devices and I'm excited to see the technology advance to a point where many consumers would be thrilled with either offering. For my hard earned money though, I'd go with the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight.

Comments about NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight:

Bought this for my wife's Mary Kay business. It was at about half the price of a lot of other e-readers, so I figured what the heck, we could always take it back.

It runs the MK applications flawlessly, and I used it at times to view and adjust my fantasy baseball team.

It is also a nice e-reader and does a decent job with the wi-fi in our home. The glowlight is a great feature for late night "e-reading" as well!

If you want an iPad, fork out the $$$ for one. However, if you are just wanting something to handle the "job," this nook is just the ticket.

Comments about NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight:

I enjoyed the Nook on my trip out of the country. It was easy to read on the beach, and great on the airplane. Much lighter than a stack of books! My son, however took his to bed, accidentally rolled on it, and cracked the screen - so beware! You would think the books would be cheaper, since there is no printing costs for them, but some seem even more expensive than the printed versions. I was very disappointed in the book prices. Also, I was led to believe you can lend the books, but it seems you can only lend them once, and only for 14 days.
ABSOLUTELY, do NOT get the Staples protection plan. It is not what the sales person leads you to believe. Rather, save the money and get a good case for your Nook.

Comments about NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight:

Bought this to use as my secondary e reader to use at work and on the go. I also have the Nook HD+ I use at home. This Nook Reader provides easy viewing of my books with no glare. The glow light works great in dark places, such as when I read in bed at night. It's light weight makes it easy to hold. It's memory storage allow it to hold hundreds of my favorite books. BN also has available every book I have ever wanted to read. The Nook replaced my original Nook e Reader which did not have the Glow Light which made it difficult to read in dark places. Don't wait another minute, get this excellent Nook and I know you will love it as much as I do mine.

You won't be able to get the books from his Nook if it won't turn on, but you can get them through your account on Barnes & Noble or through your computer.

The screen protector is already built in for the Nook Simpletouch with Glowlight. Adding another one can damage the functioning of the Glowlight.

The NOOK is an ereader, the type and number of games that can be downloaded is very limited. You can get word and number puzzles from a variety of sources.

Honestly, it depends on the stage of Parkinson's they are in (how greatly it's affecting their movement). Regarding your concern about Internet access, the NOOK has built in wi-fi for you to use. If you are in an area that has no wi-fi access, then the NOOK would be an ornament.
