Neatdesk for the Mac offers a lot of promise. The real question right now is whether you are prepared to spend the time to overcome the limitations. The setup is a breeze. The scanning part of the operation is very fast. There is a bit of a delay as the OCR part of the software analyses the scanned material, but you can work with the parts that have been analyzed if you have several "pages" being scanned at one time. The software is fairly intuitive at both identifying whether something is a receipt, a contact, or a document as well as pulling information off the receipt/business card/document to populate the data fields. You can create subfolders to sort your results. There is some ability to add fields for the data captured (i.e. for meal receipts you can create a field for tips (not in the default)) but the fields can't be moved around so the added field is at the bottom and you have to scroll past many fields you don't need.

The real issue is the OCR accuracy and the need to correct the classification of documents (because the default fields are different for different types of documents). You can't just scan and forget. It simply isn't that accurate. On almost every scan you will need to edit the data for vendor, contact, date, or type of document. It's great that it captures what it does. But there is a time commitment that the hype minimizes.

The other thing is the Neatdesk vs. the Fujitsu Snapscan. The Neatdesk is clearly better if your primary object is to capture documents for archiving like receipts where you don't need to manipulate the data or retrieve details in the scanned material. The Neatworks software is just much better organized for that. On the other hand it is nearly worthless if you are trying to scan documents that you later want to edit and use such as letters, spreadsheets, etc. The Fujitsu Snapscan is much more useful for the comprehensive scan jobs (although the OCR capability remains an issue - you will still have to proofread and edit each document if you are looking for 100% accuracy - 95% accuracy can be a problem in terms of missing data in broad searches and of course is completely unacceptable in any serious communication documents).

I use this product ever day. Cons: it has trouble detecting only one or two pieces of paper, especially if it's a light weight receipt. It does NOT export to Quick books which is a major draw back. Unless receipts are in pristine condition, it will not automatically read all the fields and you have to manually enter them. It's better than using a flatbed scanner by far, but it's not as great as their website claims. (of course) I would recommend to fried with clear cavets.

I bought to help me reduce paper clutter and provide organization to my never ending pile of receipts for both business and personal. I LOVE the fact that I can search for a receipt in a fraction of the time it used to take me and export information to Quickbooks or Quicken. I have recommended to several of my clients.
