Neatdesk for the Mac offers a lot of promise. The real question right now is whether you are prepared to spend the time to overcome the limitations. The setup is a breeze. The scanning part of the operation is very fast. There is a bit of a delay as the OCR part of the software analyses the scanned material, but you can work with the parts that have been analyzed if you have several "pages" being scanned at one time. The software is fairly intuitive at both identifying whether something is a receipt, a contact, or a document as well as pulling information off the receipt/business card/document to populate the data fields. You can create subfolders to sort your results. There is some ability to add fields for the data captured (i.e. for meal receipts you can create a field for tips (not in the default)) but the fields can't be moved around so the added field is at the bottom and you have to scroll past many fields you don't need.

The real issue is the OCR accuracy and the need to correct the classification of documents (because the default fields are different for different types of documents). You can't just scan and forget. It simply isn't that accurate. On almost every scan you will need to edit the data for vendor, contact, date, or type of document. It's great that it captures what it does. But there is a time commitment that the hype minimizes.

The other thing is the Neatdesk vs. the Fujitsu Snapscan. The Neatdesk is clearly better if your primary object is to capture documents for archiving like receipts where you don't need to manipulate the data or retrieve details in the scanned material. The Neatworks software is just much better organized for that. On the other hand it is nearly worthless if you are trying to scan documents that you later want to edit and use such as letters, spreadsheets, etc. The Fujitsu Snapscan is much more useful for the comprehensive scan jobs (although the OCR capability remains an issue - you will still have to proofread and edit each document if you are looking for 100% accuracy - 95% accuracy can be a problem in terms of missing data in broad searches and of course is completely unacceptable in any serious communication documents).

I use this product ever day. Cons: it has trouble detecting only one or two pieces of paper, especially if it's a light weight receipt. It does NOT export to Quick books which is a major draw back. Unless receipts are in pristine condition, it will not automatically read all the fields and you have to manually enter them. It's better than using a flatbed scanner by far, but it's not as great as their website claims. (of course) I would recommend to fried with clear cavets.

Disappointed NeatDesk customer

Comments about Neat Company NeatDesk Scanner for Mac:

First, I generally do not write reviews. This time, however, I felt the need to express my frustration with an expensive office equipment purchase.

I have a small business, which accumulates a lot of receipts. I purchased this devise as a quick way of electronically scanning receipts, and then storing the receipts in individual electronic expense files. From this I'd create expense reports for my accountant.

The word recognition software was what I was told from the manager at Staples (as well as review articles I read) that added the value as well as extra cost to NeatDesk. So far I have scanned 209 receipts, and only small percentage scanned with all the receipt info word recognized correctly.

My goal was to eliminate key strokes and thus save time. As of now I wish I would have bought a less expensive devise from another company that didn't have the word recognition software. I'm ultimately entering 99.99% of the info manually, and that makes me irritated.

One plus is that it does scan receipts and other documents quickly. Maybe I can find another use for NeatDesk. Unfortunately, I already own an all in one system with a scanner, so I didn't need another scanner that only scans.

For ME, The Easiest Way To Archive Paper

By BillMiddletownRI

Comments about Neat Company NeatDesk Scanner for Mac:

For the longest time, I've been attempting to use a 'regular' scanner to scan all of my receipts and documents - I _was_ pretty much giving up - I've tried MANY 'tricks' to get those longer than 8.5x11 and/or those that are 3 inches wide and 18 inches long, much like those from "Office Supply Stores" (ehem).

(i.e. cutting it in half then either taping it to an 8.5x11 sheet of paper or scanning it/them twice. Of course doing all of this/these tricks MANUALLY and EXTREMELY time-consuming.

Then selecting which folder to put 'em all in depending on what the scanned document was. (The TV commercial actually showed ((me) something that appeared to be too good.)

I was wrong - the TV commercial doesn't do a good enough job demonstrating just how easy/friendly it it - it IS indeed that easy to use - with the exception of some minor typing to file your scanned receipts/documents it's THAT easy. I've not had it for that long - but I can see that the more you use it, the more flexible it's going to be. (Heck scanning anything, converting to PDF, then attaching the scan to an email couldn't be easier.

There is only a (VERY MINOR) con that I have - I 'understand' this stuff quite well - I've been an IT person starting back in the DOS/CPM days and have gone-up the ranks to eventually become an engineer. Needless to say a very extensive background and understanding.

With the above in mind: The documentation MIGHT be a little better explained. In this day-and-age where it seems everything installs itself, by itself, on it's own perhaps more/better/easier to understand hovering-popups, etc...

If you've been wanting to (EASILY) store all of your documents and receipts, (send an email with a PDF attachment of your scan) they couldn't have made it any easier.

I neglected to mention the OCR that's built in - and it does a VERY good job - let's face it OCR has NEVER been "that accurate" however, this product seems to be getting REAL close to doing the best job, in my opinion.

Another thing I neglected, it's FAST, the TV commercial (I thought) shows just how fast it REALLY IS. (Many TV commercials will indeed photo-shop or 'technically' air-brush their ads, but not this one - it scans as fast as it is demonstrated in that/those commercials.

BTW - I chose the Mac edition - I'm not sure if the Windows package is any less/more.

This scanner works excellent however, during installation/registration I was offered the iCloud setup and as much as I tried to get around it, since I didn't want the feature, the second I click next, the system signed my up for their iCloud. Uffa! So now I'm guessing that I would have to wait for 30- days trial to run out so I can finally register this product with the serial number/product key it came with.

When you sign up for iCloud during the initial installation you're never asked to use the product key.
