Once you fix the problem it has with Vista concerning the database, which customer service quickly guides you through, you're in business. The software it comes with is a little buggy for Vista 64, but when the scanner is used with Adobe Pro 9, it's a dream. Super fast and does a great job.

Also, the software it comes with is great (despite the bugs) as it actually reads the receipt and has the tax schedules in a drop down box to select from in terms of business expenses with little tax tips for each one and a brief explanation.

This is really a product to try out. Like the line in Pulp Fiction goes, once you try this, you will know where that extra money went.

I also use a Xerox Documate 510 at another office I work at, which is good, but I wish I had the NeatDesk everywhere I went.

The business card feature is also great and how it physically scans them and receipts with a special feeder (which is very forgiving) is really nothing short of a miracle.

I have had this for about a week and thanks to the backup feature to multiple drives (one of which is backed up to an offsite drive), I feel safe shredding and getting rid of all that paper.

It is small and has a good look. They haven't marketed this product well, but it certainly is a sleeper hit of 2009 as far as I am concerned.

It's a good scanner and the software is very clever at parsing business cards and receipts. It is very good at just grabbing a load of documents and scanning them in with little effort. My biggest problem with the product was the software. For some reason it saves the documents into a database only and exporting them takes more time than creating them. I also never understood the tagging features as that's just not the way I think when I'm looking for documents. In the end, it was too expensive for the trouble and I ended up returning it. I'll just get a regular scanner and save the files where and how I want. Also, as a side note, the software only works from the user's computer so saved documents in the database aren't really available to other users with sharing. Bit of a nuisance when you use one computer for data storage and another for daily tasks.

Comments about Neat Company NeatDesk Scanner:

I bought this high price scanning package because I thought the software would be beneficial. It was only after setting it up and learning how to use it, that I finally figured out that the s/w does not interpret documents. Over and over the product representations state that it will extract key information from receipts and business cards. Sorry, I was not sharp enough to read between the lines and figure out that this feature does not apply to statements or invoices. Hmmm, I did not know that by receipts they meant only the smaller documents, and the full page documents are not analyzed by the software. I could use this product to scan to PDF and create my own file names at the time of scanning - but hey, I could do that with a lot of other scanners that don't cost nearly this much. I have not use for the business card and receipts scanning features. I strictly need to scan statements.

Another concern is the proprietary filing system, which would likely be difficult to convert if I decide to quit using the Neat software in the future. Since the software provides me no benefit, I am returning this product immediately.

I am very happy with the Neat Scanner. It is easy to set up with the computer. I can easily set up my folders and when I use the keywords I enter to identify the file, I can pull it up easily. I am usually hesitant to destroy the receipts, so the Neat Scanner makes me feel confident to shred the original receipts since I have them stored an backed up. I am surprised at how quickly it scans. I would recommend this without hesitation. I am seriously considering buying one for my office as well.

Comments about Neat Company NeatDesk Scanner:

As a consultant, having one place to keep all my client business cards and receipts seemed like a great idea. After installing on my 2 year old HP computer with Windows 7, the Neat software (5.1 SP2) worked fine for about two weeks, than just stopped working altogether. Neat phone support was polite but said that it may have crashed due to an automatic Windows update. So they replaced with updated Neat software (5.1 SP4) but that also failed to work. Ended up losing all contacts and info put into system.

This scanner can be used to scan old photo into picture files, such as jpeg. The saved photo file can be placed on to a CD for storage. You can use any CD that is supported by your burner, CD, CDR, CDRW etc.

                A:

The Neat Company NeatDesk Scanner is more geared towards keeping all your receipts, documents, etc. in one manageable place. For scanning and saving old pictures, you could use an all-in-one printer, such as item 951136 as an example. The images would be saved to a file on your computer. You could then choose to burn to a CD or DVD. CDs and DVDs of today are better quality, choose one that writes once, so they can't be written over. For more technical assistance, I recommend contacting the manufacturer of a printer you choose.

Would this be a good scanner for a small medical office to scan files for document storage.

              1 answer

              • A:

This would be a very good scanner for a small office. This unit can scan 25 pages-per-minute (PPM) in grayscale/B&W, and 8.5 PPM in color at 200 dpi. At 300 dpi, it scans 7 PPM in grayscale/B&W, and 6 PPM in color. The database software included with the unit can scale to approximately 1.5 million receipts for storage.

Hello, I was wondering where the documents get stored after the scan? Do they exist on the hard drive of your computer or do they go in some cloud, (Icloud) as it is advertised. Does the user designate where the files are stored or do they automatically go to the "Neat Cloud"?

The USB cable comes with the scanner, but the ink toner does not. You don't need ink toner as this is a scanner, and scanners don't require ink as they are just stored as a graphic onto the medium which you will be scanning the documents to.

There are no patches yet to make this officially compatible with Windows 8, but you can use Neat 5.1 SP2 on Windows 8. It will display a red warning message the first time you use it, but there are no reported problems with it!

If you are referring too the Neat Receipts portable scanner, they both basically do the same thing. The NeatDesk has more format options and can scan more documents at the same time.
