Perfect router for small networks. Faster than Wireless G, and has a nice feature which auto assigns a wireless channel based on what networks are around you. Helps a lot in my apartment complex where everyone has their own router and no network experience, making the networks collide and unusable. This router will find the right channel, and you'll have a stable, secure network up and running in no time.

Probably not the simplest router to install as a "first time router installer". The set-up CD would not run, even though the router was working. I called Netgear tech support and had difficulty understanding the tech as he spoke with an accent foreign to me. He said I did not need to run the CD if the router is working. I asked "how do I set up a secure, locked network?" "I'm sure the CD would've provided instructions for that". I don't think he understood me! He repeated "you don't need to run the CD if the router is working". At this point I was providing free wi-fi to anyone who happened to park in my driveway. He never answered my question. I called Staples. They were able to assist me and I was able to set up a secure, locked router. Thanks Staples. I would probably buy a different brand of router next time. If you buy this router, be sure to read the set-up instructions CAREFULLY and you better follow every step precisely including: when to turn off your modem, when to plug in the router, when to turn on the modem, when to turn on the router, etc...

Comments about Netgear WNR1000 RangeMax™ 150 Wireless Router:

This product was released before Windows 7 became available, so the setup CD won't work, but if you have some techie knowledge or know someone, Netgear routers are easy to set up without the wizard. I've done Linksys & DLink router setups but prefer Netgear for its no-nonsense ease of setup. Choose this model if you want better than G range but not if you want high-bandwidth stuff like music streaming, tv, etc. Get the dual band N router.

I have anywhere from 4-6 grandchildren at a time at my house, all with laptops, tablets or other drvice. Is it possible for all of them to do internet, games, streaming, etc., at the same time thru this router that will be linked to my internet provider? Thank you.

We currently have a modem that is also a router (wired). Will this product work with that modem (a Zoom), or will we also need to get a new modem?

This will work with your current modem. You would just want to make sure you are connecting to the correct wireless network when you use your computer.

You still need a modem. The modem is what actually connects you to the internet. The router just broadcasts a wireless signal.

I want to use to connect my iPod touch to internet. I have an HP Pavilion desktop computer. How does the router connect to the computer? Would I need the 29.99 adapter suggested on the Staples website? Thanks
Asked on 12/1/2012 by IT-challenged from North Carolina

                1 answer

                • A:

This router has a built in 4 port Ethernet hub, so you would connect your desktop computer via that. The 29.99 adapter is if you want to connect your desktop via wireless and don't already have a wireless adapter in the computer.
