This seemed like the ideal solution to expand wireless coverage by replacing an old router. Wired PCs connected right away. Then I tried to connect our 3 iPhones and hit the BIG snag. No matter which channel you use (or auto) and whether you have on open network or encrypted, even change the network name, reset iPhone networks and reboot, an iPhone will not pick up the SSID of the router. A MacBook Air quickly picked up the 5 GHz network, and an HP laptop connected, but no luck with iPhones 3, 4 or 4S. Apparently NetGear knows of this problem and has no solution. So steer clear if you're an iPhone user, at least until NetGear comes out with a fix.

Comments about Netgear N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router:

Unit was easy to set up, then started losing internet connection in irregular intervals after about two weeks and became totally unreliable. After spending approximately 3 hours on 3 different calls with Netgear tech service reps, installing new firmware, etc. They issued an RMA as the product is defective. I found that I have to pay for shipping the defective unit and, if I need a replacement unit before I ship the product out, would have to pay even more. I bought this product because we need a reliable router. Now I am several days to a week without a router - and have to pay for the service! I cannot recommend this product.

Comments about Netgear N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router:

I tried two of these units and both went right back the same day. They were easy to set up but the first worked for a couple of hours and then kept dropping the internet connection, wanting to continually reboot and the other one failed right away. While they were working they were great but we need reliability. I replaced them with the Linksys E4200 and it is working very well. Beware if you buy one of these! There are clearly firmware issues that are not resolved with the firmware update (I did that right away both times). This was my first Netgear router after using a succession of Linksys routers and I don't think I will try switching again.

So far I have not been able to successfully install this product. I used an earlier version of netgear with my satellite (HughesNet) service, but I have not been able to connect with NetGear 900. I just recently upgraded to Gen4, could that be the issue?

Shouldn't be a problem this router is compatible with Hughes Net Generation 4 service. Is the host ip address set correctly?

Is the Netgear N900 compatible with the Ariss RM722 Docsis 3 modem?
          Asked on 9/23/2012 by gillen

          1 answer

          • A:

I am assuming you meant the Arris TM722g. There is no RM722, and the TM722 is Docis 2. The answer is yes, the N900 is compatible with the TM722g. When you connect the router make sure to power cycle the modem as well.

my husband is a gamer, is this a good router for multiple gaming systems?
          Asked on 5/15/2012 by Kenzie

          1 answer

          • A:

The Netgear N900 is great for multi gaming systems for several reasons. For one thing the speed for the wireless connections range from 450 to over 450 Mbps. This speed provides a great connection for larger homes and multiple systems. In addition, The Netgear Genie makes it easy to install to many systems such as an IPad, tablet, computer, or smartphone.

Even though the USB ports look like USB 3.0 ports, they are USB 2.0.

          • A:

This depends on if the external hard drive has that connector, newer models now support this connection.

USB 3.0 will have a light blue color inside the connector not black like USB 2.0. though 3.0 is fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices.
