It's excellent, the pre-assigned IP address is a bit goofy for a switch , fine and very useful and all, but I imagine a bit of a pain for non-tech / network savvy end users. If it happens to be within your existing subnet range, your all set,if it isn't, it's not a real pain to change but a bit odd for a switch. Just my two cents, but a darn good, cool to the touch, silent switch. 4-5 stars easy.

I bought this switch because I thought it would be great because it can do VLAN's, DHCP, and other stuff, but I was wrong. I do like that you can use a GUI instead of CLI to work with the unit. I am not sure why, but the software that you install for the product is basically useless.
The only thing the software does from what I can tell is give you the firmware, model, and IP of the NETGEAR devices that your computer can see on the network. It also allows you to change the IP address and password of the device, also upgrade the firmware. It does not even do a good job of the firmware upgrading. Other brands have the option of automatically upgrading the firmware, or finding the firmware for you, but with this one, you have to go find it on the internet and download it yourself before it will install.
No with the web GUI, there is this one page that requires JAVA. But when I tried to get it to work it never would. There was a warning with JAVA that said something about the security level of the unsigned certificate, or something, and it would not run. The only way to get it to run would be to go into your security settings of JAVA, not your browser, and to manually add the IP address of the switch just so the browser would allow the JAVA applet to run. It is supposed to be easy, and I shouldn't have to do all of that to get it to work.
Some of the other screens are irritating, and I didn't like using them on the web GUI. Some things were not that difficult, but some things could have been easier to use.
I did like the nice metal case. All of the RJ45 connections are on the front, while the power connector is on the rear. I would have preferred all of the connections on the same side, both the RJ45 and the power. The unit is way too small to rackmount, so if all of the connections were on the same side, I could locate the unit differently.

Comments about NETGEAR ProSAFE 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Switch GS108T:

Great switch for the money, nice metal case, 1GBS connectivity and LIFETIME Warranty. Down side is that this is just a basic switch, no layer 2 or layer 3 controls or management. But most who buy this will not have a need for mgt features anyways.

Nice sturdy METAL construction case with bright LED activity lights for each of the ports. Simple to install just follow the instructions or use the
CD with the information on it. Just plug and play with the switch to your router and your good to go!.

    Great Deal

Comments about NETGEAR ProSAFE 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Switch GS108T:

This is a great product. It's got a lot of "enterprise" features at a consumer/SOHO price. I've owned three of these for around two years, with no failures or burnouts so far. Key features include VLANs, settable port speeds, SNMP bandwidth and error tracking, PoE powered device as an option (you can power it with PoE). How are these features useful?

Situation: Two tenants, one LAN, one internet connection. Solution: VLANs.

Situation: Air Conditioner with a fancy computer controller needs to be on a LAN to control it. Use VLANs to keep this unit entirely off of your LAN to improve security. (These things are hackable.)

Situation: lame legacy device doesn't play nice on your new gigE LAN. Solution: set the port to be whatever speed you need, without negotiation.

Situation: Your LAN needs to traverse a hallway to reach an office, and you are temporarily using a wire taped to the floor and covered by a rubber cable protector. Solution: use link aggregation to bond two ports into one, and reduce the problems of a damaged cable, and use SNMP monitoring to record errors. (Use Cacti to record the data.)

Here are the headaches and problems: web gui is a little weird, but it's tolerable. The monitoring feature isn't 100% there - people report some dropped packets.

Great product for the small net builder, small business network consultant, etc. Cisco features and Netgear prices, and without expensive service contracts.
