This is a fantastic security product for the price. If you want a highly secure, inexpensive solution to connect two small offices with a LAN to LAN IPSec tunnel, or a remote access VPN solution so business data sources such as email, intranet, shared folders can be securely access from anywhere, this fits the bill. This type of solution generally costs hundreds of dollars more.
Being an IT networking professional, setup took a matter of minutes and I was soon accessing files from the remote office servers and using the business email with Outlook. However, to a less skilled user setup even with the wizards can be daunting, especially configuring the firewall rules. Fortunately, Netgear has excellent support for their products,.giving a user the confidence to get the product working right. I called them with a few questions around midnight so I could evaluate their support, and a friendly tech came on the phone line in a minute, eager to solve the issue. ( of which I had none). So all in all, this is a five-star product given the money it can save a business from monthly site to site data line costs and the client vpn solution. I have used many netgear products over the years, and their excellent warranty and support makes this a win-win solution.

I *really* want to like this product, and I think what it sets out to accomplish is great, but unfortunately for me it is simply too unstable to use or recommend.

In a nutshell, this thing will simply stop working 1-2 times a day, sometimes more. My only recourse is to power it off/on and wait for 5 mins for it to power back up and eventually reacquire an IP address from my ISP.

Since I gave up on this and put my old router back into service I haven't had a single issue in the last 15 days.

I'm sorry, but no matter how many features this thing has, it's of no use if I have to restart it on a daily basis.

Finally, this is from my experience par for the course for netgear. I had an older netgear wifi-router that had many similar problems, though not as severe and while netgear came out with a few firmware updates, after about 6 months it seems like they just released a newer product and forgot about the one I had.

I think the problem here is the company, now that I've had a 2nd product of theirs. I am sure the problems with this router are software and thus fixable, but their software engineers are either too lazy or too incompetent to fix the problems.

Oh, and I am not the only one, do a google search, its littered with people having similar problems to mine.

The web UI is nice and I suppose this would be fine for home use but it crashes/resets far too often to be used for any sort of business application. Not at all what I expected from net gear.

Comments about Netgear ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit VPN Firewall:

The gateway router that I had been using only had four ports and was starting to fail on a fairly regular basis. I needed a similar unit that had more than four ports given the number of computers that I employ requiring both internet access as well as networking sharing of information between platforms.

Setting up the Netgear ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit VPN Firewall was virtually trouble free. It was truly a case of removing the old unit, connecting the new unit, and then using it.

It has run flawlessly since I installed it and I have no complaints.

Comments about Netgear ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit VPN Firewall:

Purchased to be used as a combination router/VPN gateway. It was difficult to set up the VPN, numerous options could not be made to function. (Example: VPN would only work in Agressive Mode, and would not function in the much-more-secure Main Mode.)

Once set up, performance was very slow, with frequent pauses in network and UI functionality, often a minute or more.

I could have forgiven all of these, but when using the VPN, it would start malforming packets when used as a router simultaneously, effectively ending the TCP sessions of all hosts on the LAN. I'm guessing that it is underpowered and the onboard CPU just couldn't keep up.

This is unforgivable, performance that nobody should have to live with.

This is a very good router. I don't use the VPN much but when I do, it works great. 99.999 in terms of uptime. Took me about 10 minutes to set up. Then when to Shields Up Web Site to help tweak the settings.

This item has 8 Ethernet switch ports built in. Adding more switches is not recommended.
