Create a network that has hardware protection against unwanted access with the NETGEAR ProSafe Firewall. With the Prosafe, up to five remote connections can be made, creating a virtual private network that can be programmed to operate at various levels of security to allow only the type of information desired through to the network's computers.

  • High-speed Networking
    • The NETGEAR ProSafe firewall can be used to create a network operating at speeds of up to 1000 Mbps. In order to reach such a high data rate, all devices on the network must have a Gigabit Ethernet interface for connection to the firewall using an Ethernet cable. The system can operate with slower devices containing maximum data rates of 100 or 10 Mbps by slowing down the speed of data exchanged through the firewall's integrated Ethernet switch.
  • Convenient 8-Port Interface
    • The ProSafe contains eight ports to establish a LAN with, each using an Ethernet interface to establish a connection with a networkable device. A WAN port is also included to connect the firewall with an Internet source, allowing all of the devices connected to the LAN ports shared use of the Internet connection, with restrictions on access based on the security settings of the firewall itself. An external network switch can be used to extend the LAN further if more than eight devices require use of the Internet connection.
  • Secured VPN Operations
    • In addition to being able to establish a LAN using the ProSafe's integrated switch, the ProSafe firewall is also capable of allowing five remote users to connect to the system and form a virtual private network. The device secures this VPN, protecting the data exchanged over the network from outside snooping.

        I purchased this unit as it indicated it had a firewall as part of the software and would allow me to use this in my home office business without my neighbors piggybacking on my internet hub. I was also very anxious about setting up the wireless hub as it appeared to be very difficult. I was mistaken on both items. I attempted to set up a firewall with a secure password for this unit but was unable to locate instructions on how to make it secure. It installed with absolutely great instructions and immediately we were able to wirelessly access the high speed internet feeding the house. I would recommend this installation to anyone moderately able to understand network environments.

          Had persisant IP/MAC address conflicts that this router immediately solved. Have multiple office devices and HTTP hosting nodes (servers) requiring advanced security which took a bit of learning to properly setup but worked perfectly.

          This is a great router to have for extra capabilities. I bought it for the extra wired ports (previous one only had four) and the firewall capabilities. The GigE speed ports was bonus. So far, so good after a few months of full time use with five PCs, a network hard drive and a network printer.
          If you want to move up into the next level of equipment for your home, this is a good second level from standard home user equipment. It is intended for small business use, but works well for those of us that have a few extra PCs. :)
          The firewall capabilities work well. I haven't had a chance to use the VPN features yet.
          The only con I had was going from Linksys to NetGear. The interface is quite different and the layout of this particular model is different again from home units. Moving to this model will require more networking knowledge and skill than the average home user. And, calling support doesn't get you any better first line experience that I could tell as they seem more familiar with the home units than the small business units.

            I needed help as the home network was hacked. Salesman talked me into this equipment. I bit the hook and wasted my money. If you need one you can have it for half price. It is not a piece of equipment you need for home use. After a going through a few IT guys I am back with my old Linksys
