I trade stocks and options from home. My 6 year old dsl modem was dropping me on an almost daily basis. I thought it was my ISP, Earthlink, because they at one time had told me that my dsl line was on some old equipment at the phone company's central office. When I called last week, they informed me that I had been moved over to newer equipment a while ago. Then why the disconnects??? The 3rd level support tech at Earthlink suggested that my old dsl modem might be the cause. I won't get into what they wanted to charge me for an upgrade. Suffice to say that I shopped around and found this Netgear combo modem-router-access point. I was a bit hesitant because some reviewers said that Netgear's support was on the weak side. Well thankfully I bought the unit and had it running in less than 15 minutes. And my download speed increased dramatically. I usually get about 6mb speed but pages seemed to load slower than what I would have expected with a 6mb download pipe. Well after this Netgear upgrade, pages populate almost instantly. This is what I would have expected with a 6mb dsl pipe. Very, VERY happy with this purchase.

I called tech support and talked to them twice for almost TWO HOURS. They couldn't do anything to get the modem to work. They told me to borrow a friend's computer & download newer installation software. They admitted there have been a lot of problems with the software included in the box, yet it WAS STILL FOR SALE. I returned the glorified rock you call a modem/router. I will never buy another Netgear product. Their tech support could NOT have been worse. I kept telling them I couldn't understand what they were saying due to their accents. They wouldn't talk slower, were rude, said my first name 200-300 times in an hour, and were completely and utterly frustrating.

Comments about Netgear RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Modem Router:

Inadequate range - in my 60 foot raised ranch I needed a range extender to go the length of the house on the same floor as the Modem/Router.
The technical support personnel have language difficulties although I will say they are unfailingly poliite and enthusiastic just not very productive.
If I need to replace this device my first thought would be to go with a Cisco Linksys.

Comments about Netgear RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Modem Router:

Replaced a failing vendor modem with this unit. Was easy to install & setup. Guest network feature helped our office. Only complaint was somewhat short Telco cable furnished with unit and incredibly cheap, cheesy, little plastic things considered to be "legs" to stand the unit upright.

          • Q:

I have internet connection through Verizon FIOS. My house is constructed of cinder blocks. I have gaming systems throughout the house (XBOX 360, PS3 and WII). Due to the fact that the gaming systems need internet service for such things as XBOX Live, etc. and with the construction of the house in cinderblock, I need to add routers in other parts of the house to do so.. I currently have tried Netgear(WGR614NA) and Netgear(FS605). This question is not necessarily for this particular router, but any of the ones thru Staples.com. Does anyone have any ideas on the best one to get with these particular circumstances ? The ones above recently messed up my internet service, leaving me without internet for almost 2-weeks because it seemed they conflicted with my Verizon FIOS router.
            many thanks for your ideas.

Wireless N would be the best option for your setup. This router should provide an increase in speed and distance over the previous two you've tried. I would recommend this model for streaming and gaming.

Yes, it should config itself automatically for CenturyLink's service; it did for me, but if yours doesn't you'll need the follow settings:
              DHCP virtual config
              8 VPI
              35 VCI
              LLC Base Multiplex operation mode

But use the CD that came with it and it should auto config itself just fine.
