I have a home office network setup. Main router is an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS), and we have ~16 wireless devices connected. The WN2000RPT is very easy to setup. My main concern was whether this would work with an AEBS, and it does, seamless.

As per instructions it asks you to place your computer well out of range of your current wireless signal and the WN2000RPT midway between the router and computer.
Just a tip: It is not necessary to do this, you can configure the unit in the same room as your wireless router, provided you're comfortable deleting your current wireless setting from your computer and setting it up again once the WN2000 is configured. By deleting the home wireless setup on your computer, the computer will not connect to your home network while the WN 2000 is rebooting.

I don't run any security on my network, only MAC address filtering. So if you have MAC address filtering you'll have to include the MAC address of the WN2000 in the list on your router. MAC address is on the bottom or back of the unit. Since the WN2000RPT setups a new wireless signal, to enable the MAC address filtering on the WN2000RPT you'll have to locate, from your router, the IP address of the WN2000RPT, type in that IP address in Chrome or any browser, and then setup the mac address filtering. It may take time, but it is very straight forward. I just had to reset my WN2000RPT to factory settings once because I had made a mistake in my setup.

Once or twice the wireless light on the WN2000RPT has gone red, indicating a weak connection, I just turn it off and turn it back on.

OK,well i have an office in my basement in my house.and the router is on the 2nd floor of my house. and since my phone needs to be connected to the modem i keep it on the 2nd floor for my wife, anyway, i was using my desktop with a d-link 552 xtreme-n network card and a dlink xtreme gigabit router.not that i needed the extender because i was getting 60-65% connectivity. but i figured i buy this product and place it on the 1st floor, right in between the router and my pc. well set-up was a piece a cake. the extender signal was 95-100% and all lights were green. (i figured great),anyway i notice the connection was slower. i went on [@] to test it on several occasion and on average my connection would be 2-3Mbps, i would then connect to my router directly even at 60% i was getting speeds up to 10Mbps. so i figured let me give a few days. but nothing changed, i tried disconnecting it, reseting it, not place a security on it. but nothing seem to worked. so if i'm getting faster speeds connecting directly to my router, than i have no use for this obsolete product.

Comments about Netgear Universal WiFi Range Extender:

I had a major WIFI "range" problem in my home. Adding this range extender totally solved my problem. I now have WIFI access everywhere in my home. I regret not getting the range extender sooner. I did need a "Tech" person to help me set it up.

Comments about Netgear Universal WiFi Range Extender:

I had concerns buying this Netgear product because of the reviews I read, but the most recent seemed it had been improved. It has not. I bought it to extend the range of WiFi for my Apple products: iTouch, iPhone, Apple TV at home. I am satisfied on how well it works with them, but after a week I used it at our cabin with a Windows 7 laptop. With the laptop it has all the problems reported in prior posts which are solved by reseting the router at least once a day. It's strange at the same time my Apple products have no problem connecting with it, I have to power cycle the router for the laptop to connect. It gave great range performance at our cabin connecting to a router .4 miles away through trees and other cabins. With a 10% signal it was able to give us up to 1 Mbps speeds from a 1.5Mbps router. At home it provides a strong enough signal to keep the Apple TV running when the microwave is on and for my mobile devices while outside. My other router takes care of the laptop at home or I would probably get tired of constantly resetting it. I would recommend it only for someone that wants to use it for the same reasons as myself, not for someone that needs to expand comverage for PCs in their home.

I had issues with connection drop almost every day. When I called customer service, he installed the latest firmware update by wired connect the Extender to laptop or desktop.
Since then it worked great throughout my 4-story house.

our two-level home netgear router has to be in present location.

reception signal to my computer located in a room 40ft and 3 walls away is 2-3 bars because of construction material, obstacles, distance, etc., whatever. i assume signal strength would be maximum 5bars if there were no construction materials or obstacles and if the computer was say 5ft away from the router.

will increasing the signal COVERAGE effectively increase the signal STRENGTH by removing obstacle, construction materials and distance factors ?

            • A:

You can use this to boost both strength and coverage. Simply follow the instructions, and use open paths to create a better connection. For example, use a room or hallway with less building material in the way between the router and the target networked computer.

There is no set point on the amount of range is added. As per Netgear; "Maximum wireless signal rate is derived from IEEE Standard 802.11 specifications. Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of network traffic, building materials and construction, and network overhead, lower actual data throughput rate."
