My several-years-old PC's hard drive failed recently and since replacing the drive would have been about 1/3 the price of a new PC, I got a new machine. Unfortunately, the old wi-fi adapter card wouldn't fit in the new PC, so I had to look for a USB solution.

I was skimming reviews on my phone and spotted an inexpensive product at Staples, but noticed that someone specifically mentioned its failure to work with 64-bit Windows (which I have). Ugh.

Well, I popped into the store, just in case there were other, similar products so I could get back online and I was surprised to find a more-recent model (this one) which specifically mentioned 64-bit on the package. Yay!

It was five bucks more than the older model, but I was willing to pay that.

When I got it home, the instructions were clear about installing the software first, then connecting the device, so I did that, but was irritated when NETGEAR's proprietary wizard/utility was installed, so I uninstalled that stuff, installed the Windows driver only, and connected the device. For some reason, there's still some lame NETGEAR tray icon that opens up not the connection wizard, but some anemic status window which I could totally live without. Right-clicking on that icon and disabling everything doesn't seem to make any difference, so I'm living with it.

I just find it a little irritating that NETGEAR thinks so highly of its software that even when I don't want to use it, I still get to see it in my system tray all the time.

Of course, maybe there's some finer point to all this that escapes me, but the bottom line is that it works and -- as best I can tell -- has had no problems.

(Since there was no "Irritating to set up the way I wanted" option in this review, I chose "Difficult to set up".)

Good value for the money, in my opinion. Oh, another plus is that -- being on the other side of the house from our wireless router -- the long USB cable permits me to place the adapter high up on a nearby shelf.

Reason: I bought a new preconfigured desktop PC with Windows 8. It did not come with a wireless card so I focused on buying a USB wireless adapter.

Decision: I was just going to get something as cheap as I could find. Talking to a sale person and reading the different boxes/information, they indicated the cheapest ones may have speed and range issues. I decided to venture up a couple of price points to this one and thought it would be better given I was setting up the desktop a little way away from my router. Plus it had a fairly high reviewer rating so I figured it would be good.

Installation: Do not assume this is 'plug and play', it was not. I tried many times to get it working and it just stalled out on the install. I tried to go on-line with Netgear (from another computer since I had no Internet on this one yet) and did not find their site very helpful. Finally I called and, after a bit of a wait, was finally given some instructions on how to download the software upgrade I needed to get this thing working. It was fairly annoying as I had to get the update, save it onto a flash drive and then install the update to the new computer. Since the directions I were given were not exactly right, after a couple of attempts, I finally got it working.

Usage: I have been using this for a couple of months now. Other than initially getting it working, I have not had any issues with it not working. However, the range/speed on this is mediocre as I have not seen it get past 24 Mbps and is typically around 18 Mbps when I have checked. Although I was not planning on getting 300 Mbps (as the maximum speed on the specification indicates), I would have expected to get at least the 54 Mbps that I typically get from my other devices in the same location as this one.

Recommendations: I would not recommend purchasing this product based on my current experience. Paying the extra did not seem to get me anything extra and certainly did not meet my expectations. In fairness, I have not tried cheaper USB adapters to see if they work the same, but I would recommend others to do that first and only pay extra if you need it.

No, the Netgear Wireless-N 300 USB Adapte is designed for windows machines. You most likely have this functionality in your mac already. Unless your wireless card in your mac is broken, all macs made in the last 10 years contain a wireless card (unless you have made a special order mac).
