I used the Staples Easy Tech program for the first time when my computer acquired a frustrating virus or program that kept throwing unwanted ads across my screen when I was trying to write letters or do research on topics unrelated to the pop-ups. My family is computer knowledgeable however we could not make this problem go away. We have also used several other companies like Geek Squad and small computer shops to repair our computers. When I brought my PC to Staples the tech set it up, reviewed the issues with me and logged me into their system. He gave me a time line and estimated cost to repair the problem. I got a call the next day saying it was fixed and brought it home after buying into their maintenance program. When I brought it home it worked fine. A few hours later I could not get access to the internet. When I called the Staples Easy Tech person, he worked with me on the phone. When it could not be resolved over the phone he asked me to bring the computer in again so he could work on it in person. As soon as I arrived he worked with me to figure out what had happened. He was patient with my questions and explained things clearly, in spite of constant interruptions by other employees and customers. The issue was resolved and I have not had a problem since then. That was about a month ago. After having many varied experiences with computer repair people I was unsure of the Easy Tech group's knowledge and experience. I was impressed. They were prompt and explained things clearly. I am comfortable recommending them.

On 9/23/14 I brought my Toshiba laptop in to the Staples in Acton, MA for a "free" security scan. A few days before I had inadvertantly downloaded some type of adware. I suspected it also carried a virus. Problems included: slow shut-down or having to force a shut-down, and while I located the adware in my laptop, (Pasta Leads), I was unable to uninstall it. I ran an AVG scan and it located and deleted 2 threats. I also ran both Toshiba and Windows diagnostics. I experienced no other problems with the laptop - no crashes or frozen screens. The technician initially had difficulty getting the USB port to work. I had used the same port within the past week to download photos from my camera without any difficulty. He finally got the scan to run and it identified several threats. I agreed to have Staples run virus removal software for $150.00. I was told that my laptop would be available in 24 to 48 hours. By late afternoon of 9/25/14 I had not been contacted by the store. I stopped by on my way home to check. The first technician to wait on me checked and told me that the data retrieval was not completed. I told her that it was left for virus removal not data retrieval. She left and another technician came out. He told me that there was some confusion but didn't go into details. I asked if the virus removal had been completed and he said "yes". But then he started rambling about other problems detected and that was why my laptop wasn't ready. Hmmm, why didn't anyone call or email me? I asked him to be specific. He told me that the ethernet port didn't work. I've used wi-fi since I purchased the computer so I wasn't concerned. Then he told me that they/Staples needed to use the ethernet port to run the virus removal program. That's a contradiction - how did they complete the virus removal if the ethernet port didn't work? I didn't get an answer. The he told me that my hard drive had been backed up "just in case." Good! Then more problems - the USB port didn't work. Well it worked for the tech who did the initial scan. He opened the Control panel. The problem adware was still there and he couldn't uninstall it! And there were programs listed that I had never installed! Had they done anything at all? Finally he told me that he would check the computer and call me later that evening. He did call me later but I could not get answers to my questions. He told me to stop interrupting him because I was making him anxious. I just paid $150 for a service that was supposed to be completed within 48 hours and no one was telling me what happened. I asked simple questions so that I could understand what was going on. Were the viruses removed? Were the problems detected after I dropped it off due to the viruses? Was there going to be additional costs? How long before it would be ready? He finally admitted that they had made a mistake with my computer but he wouldn't elaborate. Then he told me that they were going to "repair Windows". I thought that was pretty vague. He mentioned problems for customers using Chrome. i told him that I had been using Mozilla Firefox for several years. He told me he had never heard of it. Seriously?! He told me my computer would be ready the next day. And that I would have to reinstall non-Windows programs myself. Why? I thought that they had backed up my computer the first day? What about all my emails, contacts and documents? He called me the next day, 9/26 and told me it was ready. I got to the store 2 hours later. He told me that they had re-installed Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, my email handler. He opened it to show me. All the contacts were gone. He found a file and imported an outdated contacts list. If they had truly backed up my computer shouldn't my address book been intact? Many of the email addresses were several years old and any email addresses that I had added in the past 4 years were gone. All the passwords I saved in Firefox, protected by a master password, were gone. All my Word documents were gone. All my pdf files - GONE! I paid for many as e-books. Why did I lose so many files if the technician backed up my computer the first day I dropped it off? I didn't bother discussing the problems with him. I needed my laptop. I spent the better part of my Saturday trying to recover information and recreate my contacts/address book. I had to install Adobe again. I had to start all my on-line bill pay accounts from scratch, not just because my usernames and passwords were gone, but because I felt I was at risk for identity theft. This was the first time I used Staples tech services. My time is valuable. Yet I had to spend days waiting for my laptop instead of 24 to 48 hours. Documents I needed for work and personal use are gone. I feel I should be reimbursed for the time I've spent reinstalling software and re-registering accounts for banking, paying bills, and other accounts. The technician who took my laptop on 9/23/14 did not warn me that any of those problems could happen. If he had I would have bought an external hard drive, backed up my system myself, and bought a new laptop!

Comments about EasyTech Free PC Security Check (In-Store):

I enrolled my laptop for the free PC security check. I was in and out in the same day. The associate was very nice and seemed to know what he was talking about.
The only issue is that, when dealing with multiple Easy Tech Associates, it seems they don't always communicate fully with each other, or some things might be lost in transition.

        loss of trust

Comments about EasyTech Free PC Security Check (In-Store):

I purchased new computor and all the bells and whistles ( extended warranties etc.) in April 2014 including full techie help with any problems that might need fixing with computor ( all in Florida). It worked well until September 2014 when Staples in Meadville PA( I hamoved in June 2014) informed me that setting up my computor with Microsoft Word would cost extra and was not included in Easy Tech ( I think thats name of service) S, I bought comprehensive technical help, but I was later told it was limited technical help.
The background is that the Toshiba Computor is defective and the problems revolve around the Microsoft operating system. Toshiba told me to back up systems and then they would remove Microsoft operating and re-install it. Staples techies were asked to back up all docs, photos etc. and then re-install. They did this twice ( new operating system failed to take first time) They dd it all except re-inserting Word the second time-- they would not re-isntall without payment.
So, I have dealt with Staples for over 20 years, and always liked and trusted your products and service. The Toshiba and the Microsoft operating system ( Windows 8.1) is terrible, but I also lost full trust in Staples because EASY TECH IS NOT WHAT IT WAS PORTRAYED AS.

My laptop was attacked by a virus - the first place I thought of for virus removal was my local Staples store. JASON HIGHT and ELIZABETH CRIGER took my poor laptop into their care, removed the virus, installed Kapersky and returned a repaired computer to me within 24 hours! I also took in our desktop for the same virus check and Kaspersky and ORLANDO MONTOYA made it his mission to meet the same time frame as with the laptop - 24 hours! Both computers are now clean as a whistle, run faster, had unnecessary items removed and work better than ever. I'd always think of Staples for this - and other - needs! Congratulations to all the techs that helped!

I took my computer for repair( I was unable to get to the internet), I went to the Ontario store, I was told that I have 11 viruses, and we will remove them off, and you will be able to get to the internet and also it will boost the speed, I agreed for the repair for the total amount of $249. after repair I picked the computer but first we checked it at the store and it worked fine, I go home and still was unable to get to the internet, I took the PC back to the store, they checked and tried again and it worked fine at the store, once again at my house did not get the internet, then I took the pc back to the store and I was told it is OK, and they will send a tech. to my house to check why I can't get to the internet, it will cost me $130, I agreed, Tech. came and after about two hours he was unable to get to the internet, we tried all other Pc's and phones in the house and all was having access to the internet except the pc subject, I was refunded the $240, another Tech. from outside checked the pc and sure enough in about 55 minutes found out that there was a virus and was removed and my pc now is fine, really bad experience.
