I do not want to subscribe to a payroll service. I just want to use the software. Is this what the basic package offers or is there additional expense?

  There is no subscription fee for up to 3 employees. If you are planning to use the software for more than 3 employees, you would select the "4 or more employees" option when activating your software. That is the only time an additional annual fee of $125 would apply. To place an order for this item, please call Staples at 1-800-333-3330.

  The cost of the Basic Payroll package includes a year's subscription to the payroll service (and support) there is no additional cost unless you have more than three employees.

  The first answer is wrong. You DO need QuickBooks Pro, Premier or Enterprise Solutions to use this program. (QuickBooks Online is not even sufficient.) It's really hard to find that out from Staples' advertising. I bought the program after reading the Staples.com description, thinking I could use it without buying QuickBooks. I then couldn't register because I don't own QuickBooks. I tried to return it, making a special trip to the local store, and they refused to accept it. I tried online and they at first refused. On the second try, Staples said they would take it back with a condescending note that it is a "one time customer courtesy" and reminding me of their return policy. I would hope they would revise the description to make it clear that you need to also buy QuickBooks Pro, Premier or Enterprise. But it doesn't seem that they want to take responsibility.
