I had MS Windows PC, but recently bought a MAC. Love the MAC but was disappointed to find that Intuit only offers 1 version of Quicken for MAC. This version is nowhere as good as the Quicken Deluxe version that I had on my old PC. But I love Quicken software so given a choice between this version or none, I guess I'll take it! Intuit folks . . .please upgrade Quicken Essentials for MAC . . .I'll be among the first customers to buy the upgrade.

I imported data from Quicken Windows 2010, but future scheduled transactions (mostly post-dated checks) became corrupted. Luckily, I didn't have many.
The differences are a bit more annoying and there are almost NO customization/preference settings, which is very different from Windows:
1. You can't customize whether to use the ENTER or TAB key to move to next field. Only TAB works now. I've used ENTER for 10+ years to move to next field; now ENTER saves and closes transaction. Really annoying!
2. On each scheduled transaction, you can no longer specify how many days in advance you want it to post to your register. You can globally select either 7, 30, or 90 days to see ALL scheduled transactions in your register (and to show the projected ending balance).
3. The new version expects that most transactions will be downloaded, not manually entered. I enter almost all my transactions manually, as either checks or EFTs. The worst part? Manual transactions begin by clicking a NEW icon or CTRL+N. But this line opens in the middle of your register, not at the end. And when you finish and press ENTER, it closes the transaction but you doesn't bring you to the next transaction entry. You have to click CTRL+N EVEN TIME YOU ENTER THE NEXT CHECK!!! THIS WILL BE THE WORST PART! Also, entry fields look very different and it's easy to put info in the wrong field. I'll probably get used to this.

BOTTOM LINE: I'll use this for 2012, but may do a free trial of another product and change next year.

Comments about Quicken Essentials for Mac (1-User) [Boxed]:

Bought this because I liked the Quicken product and transitioning to an iMac. I read the reviews and unfortunately there are no good MAC financial software options. Bought this one hoping it would be better than the reviews. It is not. Quicken call is essentials and that is what it is. It works as a nice checkbook/ account organizer, but beyond that it has none of the robust feature we see in the windows version of the product. I plan to continue to use it, but mostly in the hope Intuit will develop more robust versions

Comments about Quicken Essentials for Mac (1-User) [Boxed]:

Initial reviews said product was horrible and nothing was as good as Quicken 2007 for Mac. When my bank no longer accepted querries from Quicken 2007 this forced me to Quicken Essentials. Every review I read was negative but I needed product accepted by my bank to pull down monthly statements. When I purchased from Staples, the box talked about a rebate from 2012. That was not encouraging. However, I loaded the product and initially was horrible. Tried to import my Quicken 07 data but error message said POWER PC software would not work on Mountain Lion Mac. I was ready to box up the software. I checked Quicken website and there was a later import application that does work on MAC OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. Once I loaded that app, ran the import things started coming together. Finally had to reload all passwords/pins for security that was good. The more I use Essentials the better I like it. I've not gotten to downloading of investment info yet.

I did not like how different it was from Quicken 2007 for Macs. Reconciling was a nightmare since you don't have the option to verify anything. QE does it automatically! It also assigns it's own labels when converting. Not nearly as user friendly as Quicken 2007.

Comments about Quicken Essentials for Mac (1-User) [Boxed]:

I had just converted from a windows format to a Mac and this made the job of transferring my records from prior years much easier. I simply copied the old files from my PC onto a SB drive and transferred them to the Mac where the program easily integrated them with files I had entered in recent weeks on the Mac.
I've also found it easier to organize my credit card accounts, compile all of my records for my tax program, making that job easy as well.

I run Mac OS X Lion Software on my iMac. Right now I use VMware Fusion to open a PC side of my computer where I access Quicken 2000. Will I be able to take that file backup from me Quicken 2000 and import it into this software? Or will there be a PC to Mac conversion that needs to happen?

I do not believe so, as the backup is saved as a Windows version. You may contact Quicken directly requiring file transfer at (800) 811-8766.

Yes, Quicken Essentials will import your Quicken 2006 data, but you'll need to download a conversion utility from http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/install--register--and-convert/convert-quicken-for-mac-data-file-to-quicken-essentials-for-mac/GEN83225.html to successfully migrate your data under Lion. (Note, also, that a Lion-compatible version of Quicken 2007 was released this week, if you need to keep some of the advanced features that don't exist in Essentials.)

Also if you have already assigned a category to one or more transactions, you can still change the name of the category; Quicken updates the name on the associated transactions for you. If you decide you no longer need a category, you can delete it (but before you do so, you might first want to merge it with another category). Note that certain categories (for example, investment categories that begin with the underline character) are permanently used by Quicken and so cannot be deleted:
1.From the Quicken Tools menu, choose Category List.
2.Right-click the category or subcategory you want to edit, and then choose Edit.
3.Enter the desired changes in the Edit Category window.
              4.Click OK.
