Are the shelves open in the back so that papers can be fed in from the back as well as from the front. Is there space for labels?

  No, the shelves are not open in the back; the steel mesh construction is around the complete sides and back leaving the front and top layer open. This desktop organizer is not designed to have a space for labels, however I am sure you can stick labels on the looped backing on the top layer, please see the image on Staples.com for a reference.

  The measurements for the compartments is 9 1/2" width x 12 1/4" height x 1 3/4" depth. A ream of paper which is 500 sheets measures 2" in depth. A ream of paper would not fit in the majority of the compartments (those with a mesh shelf on top and bottom), but a ream of paper would fit in the top compartments as there is no height limitation.

Q:
What is the weight of the product; or if you don't know the product weight, what is shipping weight?

Also, Staples.com sells many literature sorter products, by Safco, Durham, Fellowes, Storex, Steelmaster, etc. These are made of one of either compressed wood, steel, steel mesh, cardboard or fiberboard, particleboard wood, plastic, etc.
It would be helpful if the Staples.com product info included the weight of these items, for planning to put them on a table or desk or on top of some other storage unit. The weight is also useful for judging how strong is the unit. Thank you.
