      Getting It Right When Installing

Comments about Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2 1/2" SATA III (6 Gb/s) TLC Internal Solid State Drive Desktop Kit:

Noticed several user reviews here mention having difficulties, so decided to offer some hints to get the best from ANY new SSD. Any new drive may need to be "initialised" in Windows (Start/Control panel/Administrative tools/Computer Management/left-hand menu Storage/Disk Management). This ensures that the SSD is recognised. In the system BIOS screen (accessed the moment the computer is powered on by pressing either F2 key or DEL key) set the SATA mode to AHCI (not IDE or Legacy). This helps the drive go about 15% faster. Regarding Nvidia chipsets on older computers including but not limited to MacBooks and ASUS from several years ago, the Nvidia chipset will, by default, limit any and every SSD to slow performance (SATA I = 150MB/sec.) . Look for a setting (or download an update/patch/hotfix) which at least boosts the performance to SATA II levels on those Nvidia chipsets. Any computer with SATA II ports will achieve snappy performance, but maximum Sequential Read/Write speeds will not exceed approx. 270MB/sec. due to SATA II limitations. In that situation this Samsung and other recent models will perform about the same as previous generation models such as the Samsung 830. Also, speeds quoted by SSD manufacturers are usually based on the "ATTO" benchmark. Other benchmark tests such as AS-SSD and CrystalDiskMark and others will produce different/lower results. Please note that none of these points are the fault of Samsung EVO SSD; they are simply the reality of how Windows works, industry SATA standards, and flawed design of Nvidia chipsets from several years ago. The problems/limitations experienced would apply to any SSD. No criticism is intended to other user reviews here, yet it must be said that all the information presented here is widely known and has been written about many times elsewhere. So, set your BIOS for SATA / AHCI, "initialise" your new drive in Windows Computer Management screen, and apply a patch or update to older Nvidia-based computers. If your computer is a few years old and has SATA II you will still get quick, snappy performance. Just don't expect super benchmark test results! Once again, these comments/suggestions apply to every new SSD not just Samsung.

Comments about Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2 1/2" SATA III (6 Gb/s) TLC Internal Solid State Drive Desktop Kit:

I thought I had done my homework before purchasing but I failed, should have read these reviews and not reviews by e-stores, since they might be fake. Didn't feel like purchasing a new MB or new hardware wanted to upgrade my rig with this SSD and WIN 7. After installing the SSD and WIN 7 also installed the MAGICIAN 4.3 software which now does not even recognize the SSD, Does not display SYSTEM INFORMATION? Finally uninstalled it and after several times of WIN 7 DL 142 updates and re-starting like at least 20 times...seriously it works. But once again I installed the MAGICIAN thinking it was WIN and not the SSD software but once again after re-starting an error message appears that doesn't recognize it. SAMSUNG needs to improve this ASAP. Running an ASUS P5N-E SLI, LGA 775 INTEL CORE 2 DUO 2.4, CORSAIR 6 GB of RAM DDR2, XFX DUAL NVDIA SLI 512 MB VIDEO CARDS

Your migration software worked pefectly everything was like it came from factory, after removing old drive, and plugging in ssd, I crossed my figures and hit the start button and wow, it was just like my old drive was there but faster a lot. Best hardware I ever bought. Plus you web sight support is awesome. Thanks

This SSD is benchmarking less than half the rated speeds. It comes with "magician" software which doesn't work. I wonder if thats why the speeds are so slow. I didn't expect to need software aside from the usual drivers to get the performance I was looking forward to. I guess they do not like Nvidia chipsets and do not support them... is the excuse. They should state that on the box.

This SSD just does not work very well. The performance is not any faster than the 830, and the magician software even after update does not recognize this as a Samsung drive so it won't run on it. Very disappointing product. Wait until the next version to buy.
