Great piece of office furniture!

I purchased this file cabinet for my new home office. I had purchased another Sauder product, the Appleton collection computer desk, which I absolutely love. I wanted to get the lateral file to match, but sadly, only one of the two drawers is designed to accommodate hanging files, making it worthless, in my opinion (Note to Sauder: you need to fix that! What were you thinking??). After an exhaustive search, I decided on this product, which wasn't the color I wanted. But I'd had great success with my Sauder desk (I'm a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to furniture construction), so I wanted to stick with their products. I wasn't disappointed. It's a solid piece of furniture, very sturdy, yet attractive. I've even gotten to like the color, even though it doesn't match anything else in my office. Oh well. The other thing I like about it is I needed a file cabinet deep enough so that I could set my printer/copier/scanner/fax on top and still have room to set up some other items (picture frames, iPod). I was amazed at the range of depths of lateral files out there...but happily, this one suited my needs perfectly! Good quality item, good value for the price.

2nd damaged box delivered...ughhh

I have the lateral file, and executive desk from this Sauder collection and really like it. The collection itself is a 5, but this shopping and delivery experience is a 1 so I averaged the two in the rating. I needed more file space so I waited and waited until I got a link for a discount and then made the purchase for a second file cabinet. (It's a nice file cabinet, well-made, sturdy, etc.) It arrived and the box had multiple rips and tears in it, one on the face of the box facing out by the front door that was 5 inches long and you could see the wood and it was scratched. Called Customer Service and they said they would pick it up and deliver another one the followed day. I got home from work, and sure enough it was there - yet, again, the box was torn and this time a whole gouge is missing from the edge of the wood. I don't have time for this!!! Good product, bad service.

The cabinet is NOT WORTH the time, level of effort and expense. It is cheaply made, the instructions are poorly written in critical assembly areas; it is bulky; and the finished product is a glossy black cheap looking cabinet. I work from home and intended to use this cabinet for my active files; but it isn't an active/daily use cabinet. It's only purpose now is to store dead files. A huge disappointment. When you spend almost $200 on a small cabinet that you have assemble yourself, the quality should be above something you could pick up already assembled at a discount box store for half the price.

I loved this furniture until today. I thought the lateral file cabinets would be able to hold files.. WRONG. The bottom of the top drawer blew out (to many files, drawer not full) while the drawers were closed, so I couldn't open either drawer to fix the problem. I ended up forcing it open about 2" to pull out paper one by one. Then, since the bottom of the top drawer was hanging into the bottom drawer, I couldn't open that one either. Ultimately, I broke one of the drawer rails. My handy man is coming over to rebuild it for me and reinforce the other drawers since I have two of these cabinets.
So much for office furniture being equipped to handle office files :(
