I bought this intending to crack it open to steal the delicious drive inside.

Inside is a Seagate ST33000651AS - 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s ... and with a Staples coupon about $100 less than what I can buy the bare drive for elsewhere.

Yummy.

(For anyone who is curious, the black shell is hinged on the front; just pry under the back and lift. Most of the plastic pins will break... this seems unavoidable, but I didn't care. It closes up nice enough without them. The metal enclosure that holds the actual drive just lifts out. Four screws and the drive is released. Just give it a tug. If you like, replace it with another drive and reuse the enclosure!)

This 3TB drive is replacing a 2TB Seagate as a Rewind Drive for my iMac. The 2TB drive was very noisy to the point of distraction. The 3TB is probably a quarter of the noise, but still more noisy than the Western Digital equivalent drive.
The price was good on the day and I had some Staples Rewards to use as well, so why not?
File transfer is slow compared to the USB 3.0 portable drive, but for auto backup it is adequate and lots of room.

I bought this drive during a promo with the sole intent of cracking the case to get the internal hard drive inside for use in my desktop. Mission Accomplished! Of course doing this voids the warranty and when checking the warranty on the internal drive you'll most likely find none when using Seagate Warranty check website. Knowing this I took the chance anyway and think its worth it.

The drive inside is a Seagate Barracuda XT 6gb/s 64mb cache.

The baredrive from another popular retailer is over 250 dollars.
