I became concerned that my existing drive was nearing the end of its useful life. It took forever to boot and sometimes I had to start the computer multiple times. And it was packed solid with original data. When I bought the computer 280GB seemed like more space that I'd ever use in a lifetime. The Seagate replacement used a utility to make itself an exact copy of the original. I left it alone for a few hours to do the data transfer, so I don't know how long it took. But it was perfect and the new drive has operated 24/7 without problems. It boots perfectly and it has filled all of the requirements to be my replacement. [...]

Difficult to get the drive to show up in the drive list.

BEWARE THE INSTALL PROGRAM!!!

The Seagate installation program selected a full drive to format and showed the drive as "blank", so I assumed that was the letter the computer assigned to it and formatted it. I lost 2 years worth of downloaded data because of that stupid program. And all Seagate did was point me to their data recovery service. For a fee, of course.

The drive itself has been reliable so far. It's quiet and runs at the speed you'd expect.

My final verdict? Good hardware, horrible software.

Comments about Seagate Desktop 1TB SATA 3.0 (3 Gb/s) 7200 RPM 3.5" Internal Hard Drive:

My Seagate Desktop 1TB SATA 3.0 (3 Gb/s) 7200 RPM 3.5" Internal Hard Drive by Seagate was shipped to me, and it was new in the box. I hooked the hard drive to three computers (One with XP, one with VISTA and one with Windows 8. It did not work in the one with XP. It did not work in the one with VISTA. It did not work in the one with Windows 8. So I went online and looked up jumper settings. There was only one other configuration. I used this configuration on all three computers again, and guess what happened? You guessed it! It did not work on any of the computers. Exchanged it at a Staples. This was a very easy process. I got a different brand, and it work great on all three computers!

Comments about Seagate Desktop 1TB SATA 3.0 (3 Gb/s) 7200 RPM 3.5" Internal Hard Drive:

I needed a drive to do a transfer from my old machine to my new machine.

I use an SSD drive, and that is the way to go.

Normally, with the SSD drive, the windows progress bar goes past 2 times on boot up.

With this drive, or any spin type drive that is not a Solid State Drive, it takes about 12 times on the progress bar when it starts up.

So, I would say 6 times faster with an SSD than a spin drive, but this drive is smooth and quiet and the BIOS reads it just fine.

If you are looking for something to use for backing up or need a new SATA drive, this is a good choice.

It won't break the bank and it is easy to buy on-line or in the store.

I used on-line, since the shipping was free and I did have to time to wait.

Staples is really great. They are so much better than any of the other stores.

I keep buying from them. I bought 2 Samsung monitors and I recommend Samsung. Don't got with the no name brands, they have dead pixels.

For the money, always go with brand name on monitors and computer parts.

I replaced a 3.5 year old hard drive with this unit, and went through the time-consuming process of reinstalling the operating system and all of the software, plus paid $300 to a technician to install special configuration of a piece of software that is necessary to my business.

This drive failed after only 6 weeks. Staples tested it and said the linear test failed. Seagate will replace the hard drive, but won't reinstall everything. An expensive lesson learned - don't use Seagate again.

            hello,

had such a bad problem with the original hard drive when purchased.
            it crashed within 2 weeks.

had the new one put in and what a difference.

            highly recommended
