I bought this drive to free up some space on my laptop drive. All in all, it works well, plenty of storage space and simple to use. Only problem I had with this drive is the initial set up. Paperwork said plug and play, but when I first tried to set it up, neither my laptop or desktop would even recognize the drive was attached. I then went through the process of downloading drivers and searching for updates etc. After messing with this step for awhile to no avail, I googled the problem. One thing I found was a comment about on some drives you must use the manufacturers usb cable for items to work. Well I was using the cable that came with the drive, but this got me thinking I may have overlooked the obvious. Luckily I had some more cables laying around with the same ends. I hooked up the drive with a different cable and it was immediately recognized by both computers. I do not know if any additional drivers were required for it's use, as by the time I got the computer to recognize it, I had already downloaded and installed a number of Seagate software in my computers. Other then this inital set up glitch, I have been very pleased with this drive.

The drive is much bigger and runs much hotter than Seagate's 500 GB Expansion Portable Drive. HD Sentinel reports temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius as compared to 25 degrees for the 500 GB model. I expect that the heat would reduce the life expectancy of the drive.

        the SATA to USB controller that comes with this drive is extremely unreliable. Drive works great outside the case when considering two issues. 1) this is not a fast drive. 2) Drive is thicker then most. may not fit in many laptops or mini cases SFF, etc.

                according to the spec sheet on Seagate's website it works with Mac 10.4.8 or higher. Hope this helps!
