I am using it as a back up device and extra disc space for my two Desktops. Sharing the device over my home group, wireless network. Actually, my first thought was just for extra disc space; however, decided to use it for a backup as well, since the software allocated the device into 3 separate drives (back up/public/private) The software (Memeo)for backup and restore is a bit confusing to use, so be careful of that. Otherwise, it is a pretty neat device.

OK as Network Back-up

Based on reviews, I did NOT install the software. Go to their website for instructions for connecting to your network without the software. Connecting my Win 7 PC was smooth. Connecting my XP PC required help from their tech support which was surprisingly good. E-mail response within 24 hours with exactly what I needed.

Using this as 'cloud' storage requires that you go through their website. I don't want the manufacturer accessing my data, so I did not enable this feature.

Contrary to other reviews, it does not run hot. I wrote to the drive for 3 hours continuous and it only got a little warm.

Speed is not much better than direct attached USB drive.

Good for the price.

Great network back up system. It works behind the scene

I bought this drive to store our home videos and other large files. Today's HD video cams fill up a computer hard drive in a hurry. Since it is a network drive, I can access the video from any device on the network if it set up correctly.
I bought this drive to replace a Seagate Freeagent external drive that crashed due to a short fall (less than a foot onto carpet) so I plan to buy a second drive to back up important data and video. Making sure they are physically secured is highly recommended.
For the money, it sets up a file server for little more than the cost of most network drives.

This is a great device, I can access all my files from my iphone on the road. The set-up was easy, and I like the fact that it is wired so for extra security I just unplug it from the network.

We bought the unit less than a year ago. About once a month we would back up selected subdirectories. As of yesterday we had used perhaps 100 GB of the 2TB capacity. Today in the middle of backing up a subdirectory, I got the message "Write Failure" and discovered EVERYTHING on the unit WAS GONE. No matter that this unit was cheap; it failed its primary purpose. I had read elsewhere that Seagate drives are prone to failure, but this is my first personal experience. In the future I will look for other manufacturers.

WE set this up to facilitate sending power point presentations to the church for Sunday morning. What we didn't expect was the automatic backup of everything on both computers -- what a bonus!
Other than some internet/connection glitches one week, it has worked well. It saves attaching files, carrying a thumb drive or any of the methods we used in the past.

Q:
1. Can I buy two of these NAS` and build a redundant system to save my files. This way, if one disk fails, the other one will still have the same data I have uploaded. If yes, how can I do it?

2. We have i-phones, i-pad, Mac and another laptop with Windows OS. Can all these upload the files into these disks without any problem?

3. Does this NAS come with a data storage management interface?
