I bought this because I live on my own and every penny I save is a major help. My cable bill was cut by about 80%. I had my parents add an extra cable box to their plan and now i only pay the box rental fee, plus a little extra toward their bill. I use it with my phone, tablet, desktop and laptop computers. All of which, barring the desktop, have simple tethering options to mirror the display to my HDTV. I rarely have a problem connecting, when I do, it is always a WiFi issue where the signal momentarily is disrupted, and the set-up could not have been easier. Also, If you plan to do as i have done and leave your Slingbox at somebody else's place, you do not have to connect it to a TV - mine is connected solely to the cable source and the internet. The Slingbox, regardless of which model, is simply one of the most useful devices I have ever owned and i can not recommend it enough to anyone who is interested.

I got this for Christmas. First snag was to get ethernet cable to the box because it is not wireless. Tip: Amazon has a flat ethernet cable for crazy cheap! Then I wanted to use with Roku (which is wireless but only costs $99). (While I'm whining about an awesome gift from a beautiful and thoughtful girlfriend, a Chromecast works great for $35 if you have the right TV and only want to watch what Google wants you to watch.) Second snag was that the Roku box does not really work with Slingbox, but only with the iPhone app. The iPhone app costs $15. (The Roku app for iOS is free.) Third snag. Read carefully. The iPhone app works with Roku. NOT iOS. NOT iPad. So I paid $15 for iPad app which did nothing except play Slingbox content on the iPad. Uninstall the Slingbox channel from Roku. Fourth snag. I had an older Slingbox Pro and paid some huge amount for the iPod app. (Maybe it was $15 but I think that is a lot of money for an app I used once per year.) Well that would not work with the new Slingbox or the Roku. But the clever iOS owner-reader would say what about Airplay? So I have to buy an AppleTV and test Airplay from the iPad app on the TV in order to watch my Slingbox on a TV in another location. It works on my laptop. (Laptop is Mac so I guess it will AirPlay to the AppleTV as well? Whew, something else to research.) So bottom line is that it seems to work in the test environment (e.g. same room with the Slingbox on the same wifi), and it works on the iPad and laptop with noticeable but not infuriatingly frequent pauses, but I have yet to get it to work on the big screen. That is annoying because it costs more than Roku, AppleTV, or Chromecast, and as an end-user, I don't see why it does not work easier and better. I sure don't know how they charge $15 for the iPhone app and another $15 for the iPad app and another $15 for the android app when everyone else give the app to encourage you to buy the gadget. The picture is ok, but I'm using a SD source. I tried HD with my old box, but the Internet never was up to the task, so I never even tried it. My old box had a cool upside down U that blinked when it was sending out the signal, the new box has a single light. Oh, when the warranty runs out, just toss the thing when it stops working, their tech support is pay-as-you-go. Even when it bricks after an update which is entirely their fault. If there was something better, I would have it (unless it is that $35,000 digital first-run movie box). So, meh, it works.

Get the M1

By howdydooit

Comments about Sling Media® Slingbox™ 350 Network/Streaming Media Player:

I just recently got this to add to my network, and an existing Pro HD. Generally, setup couldn't be easier, and I love being able to invite users to the unit via email, as I have two young adult kids that get to benefit, and it's a lot less gymnastics setting it up with a simple email. I personally mostly use this on my home network through a MOCA bridge. Video quality is OK, nothing special. It's about par with my Pro HD, even though that's WiFi and specs out as lower resolution output. I am also able to use the integrated IR blaster, which is one less wire. The big 2 things that drop the 350 down in my eyes are the browser experience. First, I can't use my 64 bit browser, which is the most personalized, but the real problem is the Slinbox browser player is not comparable in user experience - even slightly - to the software player. That's why my title says "Get a M1" - it supports a dedicated player app. As my second Slingbox, I can put up with it. I will keep it as a secondary box to the older Pro-HD. The browser window takes up too much space with useless borders. You can't hide the controls unless you go with a popup player full screen. If you go with the popup player, you can't resize it properly. I typically have 2 monitors in my home office. If I get really busy, I can dynamically resize the Pro HD player to the size I want and put it in a corner. I can hide the controls, menu, and borders in video only mode. I can use keyboard shortcuts to resize it, zoom it, bring up and hide the remote, and, most importantly, I can make it stay on top of other applications. There's no way you can make the browser stay on top, nor would you want to, because it takes up so much space. Another browser issue - when you are using the traditional browser, or the popup browser player, and you shrink the player to give you space for other things, too high of a percentage of the space dedicated to the player is not the actual video. Sometimes, the browser will blank out for a second. Every time I hover over the signal meter to check bandwidth, it always blanks out and sometimes disconnects from the slingbox. I get W200 errors all the time, and I'm hard wired to the router and between the router and the slingbox via MOCA. The browser is clunky at best. It forces me to use a browser I don't use for anything else (IE), just so I can also keep using my preferred browser simultaneously (Waterfox - the 64 bit version of Firefox). The Slingbox has great utility. If you've never had the luxury of knowing what a real player feels like, or If you're a casual user you might not miss it. That said, after buying my first car with power windows, I never went back to a hand crank.
