      This unit will not puncture the cap, it will need to be removed.

      It doesn't say exactly how it works in the owner's manual (see the link below). It only says to place the water bottle on top, so it appears to be simple. SoleusAir should be able to tell you more; their toll-free number is (888) 876-5387.
