          When the lead that came with my mechanical pencils ran out, I decided to go with Staples lead since it's so much cheaper than Pentel.

          Big mistake.

          I take tons of notes in math class. My pencils with their default lead hadn't given me any trouble before. Once I started using the Staples lead, I was refilling CONSTANTLY since it kept breaking all the dang time. Any tip longer than the tiniest millimeter or two would break. If I was accidentally too rough while gingerly inserting the lead into my pencil, it would break.

          I got so tired of it that I ponied up for some new Pentel lead, even though I still have two containers of the Staples stuff. Sigh.

                  A:

                  The higher the number the thicker the width of the lead. Typically, .7mm is the standard lead, .5mm is a fine point lead. If you're looking for a stronger lead, I suggest either .9mm or .7mm.

                  Mechanical pencil leads are categorized by thickness. This means the .09mm lead would be the strongest since it is nearly twice as thick as a .05mm lead.
