I bought this SPL-TXC24A because my old shredder finally died, a Staples SPL-TXC22A, which this newer model replaces. They are almost operationally identical, and the previous one lasted four years and eleven months to the week. I have no intentions of using the bag of this new model, so I just took out the box from the bottom of the bin and put electrical tape over the 'vent holes' that were beneath the box so that no paper shreds fall out of the bottom.

The SPL-TXC24A will shred 24 sheets of paper at a time, but they just barely fit in the slot and the "Reduce Paper" light comes on. This is not a problem for me, as I am well aware that all paper shredders overstate their capacities, and I expect to be able to regularly operate at 75% of the stated maximum. I have no problem operating without the bags, and I have no problems at all with the On/Off switch as some reviewers have stated. This shredder is quieter than the previous model, which is rather impressive. The cross cut shredding leaves nothing for data thieves to decipher from your papers and the small paper chunks (if you shred, say, 18 sheets at a time, the shreds are compressed into chunks, 18 pieces thick) make for excellent compost or mulch. This is only day two of operations for me with this shredder, but I can speak of the long-term viability of the previous model, the SPL-TXC22A which is nearly identical.

I have not yet had a jam, which was a rather regular occurrence with the previous model. The slot on this model will not allow you to put more paper in than it will shred without jamming – if you can fit it into the slot, it will shred it. The former model's slot allowed you to put too much in which allowed for frequent jams – without this problem on the 24A I expect this shredder to last far beyond five years.

My first shred cession with this shredder was 25 minutes of continuous shredding at about 18 sheets at a time. I had no jams and no overheating shutdowns. While this shredder doesn't have a temperature gauge like the previous model, at 25 minutes it felt warm, but not hot. I lubricated the shredder at this time, as I'm supposed to do that after every 30 minutes of shredding.

The 'Bin Full' light doesn't come on until the bin is 95% full (again, this is without using bags). This is excellent, because if the bin filled any further it would spill paper shreds upon emptying. This fill capacity is accomplished due to the intake slot being further forward on the machine than the previous model so that the shreds don't pile up along the back of the bin, which caused a 'Bin Full' shutdown on the previous model at one-third full capacity.

Therefore…with a 3 year warranty I have little doubt that this shredder will serve me well for many years (the previous model only came with a 1 year warranty). If you need to do significant shredding but don't want to spend $1000.00 on a shredder, I don't think you can do much better than this model. You do get what you pay for, and spending less will not suffice if you plan to do lots of shredding. If you value the privacy of your documents, a shredder that produces 'strips', as opposed to cross-cutting, will not do, as strips leave too much readable data. This shredder will do everything I need it to, quietly and without jamming, and for enough years (many) that the price per year is very low.

I have had a very frustrating time over 3-1/2 months because of the finicky on/off switch. On the advice of another reviewer, I used binder clips on my liner bag. On the advice of the Staples shredder hotline people I pushed the button VERY slowly. And, I returned my shredder for a completely new one which had the same problem. Yesterday I called the Staples shredder hotline and went through the escalation and FINALLY solved my problem.

The shredder is designed (stupidly, I think) to go to "sleep" after 20 minutes. According to the manual, you need to push the button TWICE to wake it up. This feels very awkward to me. Anyway, the problem with the push button is that often even pushing the button twice would not wake it. Here is the solution: To wake the shredder, you push the button once (normally, no need to push down slowly as I was advised the first time I called). Then you WAIT TWO SECONDS and then push the button again. I have tested this many times over the past 24 hours and it has worked every time.

Once you get the shredder turned on, it works great. I give it two stars because of the quite unintuitive user interface. I shouldn't have to work around stupid user interface quirks and I shouldn't have to have gone through all I went through just to learn the trick.

So far so good!

Comments about Staples 24-Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder:

This machine is much quieter than our old shredder. The cross cut shreds take up much less room than the long shreds, so we don't have to empty the bin as often. We have been using the new shredder for about two weeks and so far everything is working well and we like it much better than the old one. We have not actually tried to put 24 sheets in, but it does handle 12-15 sheets at a time. I am reserving one star because we have not yet tried to shred credit cards or CD's, so I am not sure how well it will handle those items.

Expensive but works

Comments about Staples 24-Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder:

The shreddder was key in shredding sensitive documents we were throwing out when moving. It replaced 10+ year old Staples 20 sheet shredder. This goes through binders of old documents like they are nothing. The ensor features means it won't run when its not shredding unlike the prior shredder that ran continually. Also, it has a nice bagging feature that reduces mess and prevents shredded paper from going everywhere when the bin is full. Even with a 20% coupon, it was over $20 but well worth it if you need a serious shredder.

Comments about Staples 24-Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder:

We have been using this shredder for about 3 weeks now. It is used regularly throughout the day and we had no issue with it. It is not whisper quiet but it is also not really loud either. I would purchase this shredder again.
