Bought this TOS link cable to bypass the hum-prone red and white RCA audio-out jacks on the back of a used DVD/CD player I was connecting to a home theatre receiver/amplifier. I figured that the DVD/CD player's optical digital audio out jack might not be prone the corrosion that was causing hum problems with the RCA audio out jacks. These TOS link cables did let me bypass the hum problem and worked fine once I got them connected. But, that connection took some doing as there were no instructions or diagrams on the packaging to tell me that the jacks only go in one way. I struggled for maybe 15 minutes trying to insert the jacks into first the DVD player backside and then the Receiver/Amplifier backside. I was about ready to pack them up for return. I figured these were a non-standard size or that my devices were non-standard. I had been shopping TOS link cables for this set-up for some time and knew they also come in a smaller mini size as well and was by that time beginning to think maybe that is what my devices required. At any rate, finally, as I continued rotating and trying and rotating and trying I got 1st one end in and then the other. There is no diagram linked to some verbiage on the package to tell one that the jacks have a little bump on them which has to be matched up to a groove that is molded into one side of the receiving end of the connection that is on the device. One bonus to the use of the TOS link: I had disconnected the RCA Audio cables of another CD-only player from the receiver/amp in anticipation of adding this DVD/CD player. By connecting the DVD/CD player through the receiver/amp's digital optical input I was able to reconnect the CD-only player to the receiver/amp's RCA inputs so that I now have two CD play back sources to feed into the receiver/amp. The grips on the ends of these cables are dished in on two sides to give your thumb and finger good traction for inserting the cables. Also the dished-in portions of grips are a darker color and provide (partially) a way of identifying which way the jack is to be rotated to fit into the device end connector. A nice feature of these cables is the way the little covers that protect the business ends of the cables can remain attached to the cable on a tether. Most other TOS link cables I've bought have protector caps that get lost once they are removed during installation. These covers, I call them tip protectors, apparently are needed to protect the cable ends during shipment or during between-use cable handling and storage. Dust and physical damage to the ends could affect their ability to transmit the light beam that carries the audio signal when they are in use. Of course, someone who does not anticipate disconnecting the TOS link cable once it has been installed can easy snip the tethers and the cap off.

Too short

Connot plave componants where you want because of length of cable. Very restricted. Should offer different lengths.

Comments about Staples 3' Optical Digital (Toslink) Cable:

This was clearance at the store. Cheap, but only 3 feet. It looks solid and well built, but the first one failed.

Pushing the reciever back into the cabinet pushed on the back of the cable and I lost reception. It didn't work again. If you have an open back cabinet and your equipment is close to each other this might work. But the cable seems to break or get damaged easily.

I like the built in TOS covers on each side and the solid connector, but if it bends it will not work.

Comments about Staples 3' Optical Digital (Toslink) Cable:

it worked well when i first set it up. the sound started to cut out for no reason. at first i thought it was my receiver, but i didn't want to go through the hassle of buying a new one so just to be sure i bought a GE optical cord and it works much better without any flaws.
