I use it for the TV, power antenna (I don't have cable), digital converter box, and VCR. The "Master" socket is great because when I turn off the TV, all the other things go off, too. And then I unplug it - I'm really "green-friendly" - it's easy to plug / unplug.

Nice, when it actually works

Put this between UPS and new computer. I thought it would be nice that the printer, modem, monitor and router would get powered off when I shutdown the computer for the night.

Put this between UPS and new computer. I thought it would be nice that the printer, modem, monitor and router would get powered off when I shutdown the computer for the night.

Sometimes it works like a charm. Other times I have to manually turn off the periphials. I always have to wait to see it I have to do the latter, which kinda defeates the purpose.

There wasn't enough room to plug the router into it, so that is on the UPS only.

Also had a hard drive failure and I don't know if the strip had anything to do with that. I've never had a drive go like that.

Comments about Staples 7-Outlet 2250 Joule EcoEasy Surge Protector with Dataline Protection:

This powerstrip was a disappointment for me. The master outlets that are always on work well, however the supporting outlets that are supposed to be the energy saver outlets do not work at all. I've tried larger devices like my stereo and my cordless phone with answering machine, and small devices like the chargers for my cellular phone and my iPad 2 and nothing works. I guess that's how it saves energy! Save your money and consider a more functional, simpler powerstrip and leave this one at the store.

Purchased the Black version, both failed and needed to be returned. Of course that was done with out a problem and replaced with others that worked.

Comments about Staples 7-Outlet 2250 Joule EcoEasy Surge Protector with Dataline Protection:

This is the most convoluted power strip of all time...and I still can't figure out it's designed intention. It has a 'Master Plug'...and this one has to be used for the others to provide power to what ever you plug into them. I have tried EVERYTHING to get this to work and nothing has a logical purpose. I've plugged in a device to EVERY outlet and still some of them don't work. Just today I had a friend over to work with me and we plugged in 4 laptop power cords and could only get two to work at a time! I've tried every conceivable combination of plugging patterns and still some don't work. I can set up a wireless network in a 10 story building, build my own desktop computers, and have built a complete kit car...but I can't get this thing to work!

I got 4 of these as a gift, was very excited at the prospect of having vampire devices automatically powered off...but then they just didn't work.

The included documentation notes 10W of power usage on the Master outlet as being the trigger point for turning the "controlled" outlets on or off. This is a lie--the actual threshold is way too low to be useful at all.

So far, I've tried using 2 of my strips, one with a PC (which consumes 3.4W in sleep mode), and another with a TV (which consumes 3.5W when off/asleep). In both cases, the "controlled" outlets stay ON, which ultimately defeats the purpose of having an "eco" surge protector. Seeing as how both of my devices are pulling about 1/3 of the stated trigger wattage, either I've got defective units, or these have a serious design flaw. Ultimately, strips like these should have an adjustable threshold that can be set based on the Master device used.

I didn't believe a surge protector could save energy, until I realized how this one worked. Very nice operation. Be sure to plug your main device into the master outlet, then the other outlets will turn off when you turn off the main device.
