Works great, very quiet. Easy to empty "drawer". If you read reviews where they say it's hard to turn on, there is a reason. You have to make sure the "drawer" is pushed in all the way, it's a safety feature. Shreds everything I've thrown at it, including CD's, DVD's, Credit Cards and staples. I used to have to remove the staples on my old shredder, an annoyance.

This shredder, in itself, works great. It looks good, shreds fast, and easy to empty.

But the "power button" must've been designed with the intent to frustate you. The shredder goes into sleep mode after five minutes of inactivity. You're supposed to press the power button twice to turn it on. BUT IT DOESN'T WORK. You have to keep pressing it repeatedly and then it will eventually decide to come on. Just now, it took 50 presses to turn it on. 50 PRESSES. On top of that, the button is reccessed so it's not exactly comfortable to push. This "sleep" feature seems like a marketing gimmick. I have a 15-year-old Fellowes shredder that never sleeps and testing with my Kill-A-Watt shows it doesn't even use enough power (< .1w) to register a draw during inactivity.

I'm past my 30 days to return this and already sent in the mail-in-rebate. I will try to take it back to the store to see if they can do an exchange. Maybe my unit is defective but it seems other reviewers have this problem too.

I think the MailMate could be a great product if it has a simple ON/OFF/AUTO button instead of this awful design flaw. It boggles my mind that people worked on this product and decided "Oh, wouldn't it be great if we came up with a button that consumers have to press and they can play games to see how many times it takes to turn it on! Oh yeah, we got a winner! Write up an algorithm to select a random number and use that to determine when the shredder comes on! Brilliant!"

The Ultimate Best Shredder EVER !!!!!

By Vampie

from Brooklyn

Verified Buyer

Comments about Staples® Mailmate M7 12-Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder:

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Fantastic product by Staples.
Now I am one to abuse a shredder....I been thru 2 other shredders and much more expensive, but this Staples MailMate kicks butt!!
This little beauty is small, compact and fits on a shelf or corner of a desk and does the job like a beast! End result, I was totally AMAZED and I just went from 4 Drawer Lateral Cabinet to 2 Drawer Use plus some very needed closet space. A cardboard box that was fill to the brim was done less than a day and only took 4 Tall Kitchen Recycle bags!!.
Now... that's a lot of shredding and abuse. Can we say two thumbs up and three snaps around the world? I CAN! I WILL!
Reason I give such a HIGH praise: Let just say, I am spring cleaning, painting and revamping my office/bedroom and I have a hot mess of old paperwork stuff everywhere in my apt too.
At first, I felt overwhelm and was like "Let the drama begin!!" What I did to accomplish the job. Blast some music, sang and shred!
Here's my Tips:
1) I got a large cardboard box, 20" x 15" and yes, I measured it just to let you know the box size!....roflmao! I emptied everything from the file cabinet except for the dividers and the old paperwork, receipts and junk mail that was hidden in plastic bags from the closet as well . Anyhoot... it was full to the brim.
2) Use my tall kitchen garbage can and place recycle bag in, easier to dump the little shredder container then once that is full take out and continue filling up.(Note: When think your bag is full ...either push down on the shredded paper or squeeze the air out and fill some more with the shredded paper.)
3) Want to do continuous shredding....Make a stack batch (stack of 10 horizontal and 10 vertical) IMPORTANT....When making stack, Quickly look thru the papers and see if any importance and needs to be a keeper! Set Aside to re-file later. Any loose receipts...that easy...just fold in half one of those old statements and spread receipts (about 10 to 15 receipts in a half folded paper) and whaaaaala you shredded your receipts also!!!
4) Any Window type envelopes just toss straight to recycle bag. I only shredded the one with my name on it and any unopened junk mail straight into the shredder. Bye bye JUNK MAIL!! Oh, you can place two to three at a time...side by side except for that annoying Publisher Clearing House envelope you definitely need to take apart to shred because it is too thick to place in shredder...otherwise just keep going like the energizer bunny!.
5) Be sure not to over shred. Empty the MailMate half way...lot easier and it does not clog the shredder. Hint: after every 4 or 6 stack pieces that was shred, empty. Every once in a while I press the forward button so to loosen any paper still in the teeth. It may seem like more emptying but believe me ...it is helpful, quicker and a lot less messier.
6) For a quick Cool down period. UNPLUG the MailMate for 1/2 to 1 hour, so it returns to cold state. Then, just plug back in and continue your shredding. While you wait...either make a meal, drink coffee and have a smoke. I did for the breaks and now am done with this box and room..and for some reason my atmosphere feels alot lighter! .yeppie!!!
PS. Don't forget to clean the dust off or vacuum before you put MailMate away or back on your desk.
Result: Paper ...check. Staples...check..unopened junk mail...check. Postcards...Check. Receipts ...check. The only thing I have yet to try out is the credit card and CD part of shredding but that's for another time and mission.
Now, MailMate can take a little vacation until I need it for the next mission!

Comments about Staples® Mailmate M7 12-Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder:

This shredder is great!! Shreds everything!# 5-6 pages at a time...staples...credit cards.....almost anything! Easy to use.....good price, good quality...would recommend for home use only since shredding basket is small...need a a bigger basket for office work but I would buy again!! I bought for another family member who shreds a lot. She loves it! Shreds everything...I have used for file folders even! It does get quite hot if used for awhile....like after 20 mins. Great usable item.

This machine is SOLID. Mechanics as good as I've seen. This is our second one, first one the "on" LED died after 5 years, otherwise still operational. I'm a business machine tech, seen lots of shredders.
