I use this on my computer table as a desk lamp. It's functional in that accommodates pens, pads, PDA, check book, a small folding knife for letter and package opening, etc. I did have to use a little multipurpose plastic-metal glue to secure the decorative collar below the on/off switch, and I also used the same adhesive to more securely affix the on/off dome. After the minor, and they were minor, fix-its, the lamp is in perfect order. Also, You should use an energy efficient fluorescent bulb, these produce much less heat and after hours of use, the lamp will remain cool to the touch. All such lamps with conical metal shades will get very hot if you use an incandescent bulb rather than a fluorescent bulb. This product, after the tweaks, is a five-star product for my application. The price and configuration of the lamp, goose neck and multi-holder base, make it an excellent buy. I am using a 13-watt CFL-bulb, which is inexpensive, runs cool, produces plenty of light, and uses less energy than its 60-watt incandescent equivalent.

Just got this Desk Lamp, easy to assemble and hook up. This will be use for 7yrs old my daughter on her study desk, hope it last. seems ok now.
Hope it's not too hot using the spiral 13w light bulb to save energy. bulb got it at Riteaid with rebate and pay nothing at all with extra coupons I had. way to go for saving. Depend on what light color on the bulb, might be too bright or dim for this lamp.

    STAPLES FORMERLY CARRIED A BETTER QUALITY BRAND THAN THIS VERSION. THE OLD ONE FEATURED A NICE, SAFE ON-OFF BUTTON AT THE BASE. THIS NEW VERSION REQUIRES HANDLING A CONE ATOP THE LAMP HOUSING ITSELF FOR POWERING ON AND OFF. IT GETS VERY HOT! YUK! I WANT THE OLD ONE BACK! ALSO, THIS VERSION HAS FLIMSY STANDUP STRENGTH IN THE BASE.

    I love useing this lamp. It was brighter than I thought it was going to be so I use it to light the living room. So far I have found good for holding pens and pencils, it makes a great studing lamp, and great lighting for plants too. The only bad thing is the metal cover around the light bulb gets hot when left on long enough, but this has yet to cause me any problems.
