My son busted up his old sharpener after a year, which had a simple mechanism batteries attached to a motor which spins a regular sharpener blade.
I was actually suprised just how cheap the components that go into these things are when I took it apart, most of these things it appears arent designed to last.

However maybe this Staples model is different? I cant say as I've only had it a month or so. I was suprised when I got this to see it didn't have a regular sharpener inside but something thats more like a grinder, this means it doesnt sharpen as fast as other models.. as it grinds instead of cutting. Still maybe it will last more than a year, only time will tell if this design is better (Im no sharpener expert!). However with Staples guarantee you can bring it back anytime if it breaks so its a no brainer really.

The one major design flaw was that you have to read the manual to find out how to orientate the batteries as this information is not on the device, which is a pain.

Comments about Staples® Slimline Battery Operated Pencil Sharpener:

I used to have a similar stapler that was shorter and more compact. The otor turned faster and sharpened quicker. this seems to take up more room because it is longer. It takes longer to sharpen the pencils if I want the same pointy tip.

I teach on-site sewing classes, and this is a useful addition to my traveling supply kit. At home, the sharpener also provides sharpening. It is new, so I cannot comment about battery life or blade sharpness/ durability at this time.

Comments about Staples® Slimline Battery Operated Pencil Sharpener:

I bought this sharpener for my husband when he was working on his state and federal taxes this year. He had to use my pencit shapener enough that he was getting frustated, since it involved going up and down the stairs and interrupted his throught process. Since I was going right by our local Staples I went in to see if I could find an inexpensive pencil sharpener. This one was perfect. The price was right, he could move it to the kitchen table where he was working on his taxes and once he was finished it didn't take up much room sitting on his small desk. Problem solved.

There is no discernible warranty on this pencil sharpener according to multiple websites, however, this item does fall under the Staples brand 100% Satisfaction guarantee, which means it can be returned if something goes wrong or you are not satisfied with the product.

If you're holding the sharpener upside down with the battery compartment open and away from you - the furthest row is negative in the upper left corner and positive in the upper right; the row closer to the middle of the sharpner is loaded the opposite - positive in the lower left corner and negative in the lower right.

I work for staples and I've also had experience in shipping. This product retails for around $10-15, and I'm also pretty sure that staples doesn't carry a replacement blade for it (I have also checked online search engines with no results). So even if it did have a replacement blade on the market you are looking at around $5 for the item itself plus shipping costs (almost the price for a new one). Best advice is to check with staples to see if they can replace the entire thing, either by looking at our warranty, or even possibly the 100% satisfaction guarantee that comes on most of our Staples Brand products. Staples is all about customer service which is the nicest part about working here, so a store manager or telephone representative should be able to point you in the right direction.

                        H - 3 3/8"

Actually I set the pencil sharpener vertically. Takes less space on my desk & I can easily reach it when I need to use it.
