I bought this for my daughters room after we purchased a new bedroom set. This bookcase looks marvelous with the cherry furniture. However, we were assembling it in the dining room, and I noticed how well it matched my Mission-style dining room set, so I am going to buy two more to display some lovely decorative plates and crystalwear.

Wow, the other reviews were right, it does smell. I have it in my office at work and have left a fan blowing on it to try to dissipate the odor.
As far as assembly - it would definitely be easier to assemble with 2 people. When attaching the mantle top to the sides, the allen wrench starts to scrape against the mantle top when the screws are about halfway in. Screws that would take a regular screwdriver would be better in this location.
Other than that, it looks nice and will work for my purposes. I just hope the smell goes away soon.

the only thing i did to add peace of mind was to apply Elmer's wood glue at the dowel holes for more strength.

Well constructed, looks very nice in my home, reasonably easy to build. I recommend buying an Allen wrench hex drill bit, I built 3 bookcases, can't imaging doing this manually with the tiny Allen wrench supplied. With the drill it goes pretty smoothly (you must do it slowly and carefully). [...]

Not sure why the negative comments were made about assembly...directions and packaging made this very easy..done within 1 hour by a 60 year old Granny. Needs two people to install back supports easily..beautiful product,,,rubberwood is very intersesting ..does have slight odor for a few hours but not offensive...buy more soon
