Although the Staples.com website doesn't say, exactly, I can give you a pretty good idea. In the package, the plastic spiral has a diameter of about 3/8 inch -- the size of a pinky finger or a fat ballpoint pen. You can wrap it around much larger bundles of cables, though, so the diameter of the spiral doesn't matter much.
I've used products like this many times to bundle cords and cables around the house and inside home-built electronics projects. This kind of coil is good for short lengths of cord, up to about 2 feet. Since you have to sort of "unwrap" the spiral and wrap it around the cables, it gets to be a major pain for longer lengths of cable. To make that job easier, cut the 8-foot spiral into shorter 1- to 2-foot lengths and wrap the cables in small sections.
Actually, to manage a tangle of cables longer than 2 feet long, especially for situations where you want to bundle and unbundle them repeatedly, I prefer two other types of cable organizers, both available from Staples.com:
Item# 630858, Large Flex Tube, $9.99
Item# 633146, Cable Zipper, $17.49
They're much easier to work with than the spiral wrap, unless the cable bundle is very thin and/or very short.
