This review is for all the users who have this converter, but could not get it to work with 64-bit Windows 7.

I just bought a new Win 7 64-bit computer and tried to install the Belkin F5u409 I had bought at Staples two years ago. Unfortunately, the drivers supplied by Belkin did not work with the 64-bit version. So, I came to the Staples website and saw all the 1-star ratings. Ah, others had the same problem too. A week or so later, I checked back and there was a new link under the picture to get the most up to date driver for 64-bit Windows. Downloaded, installed, it works!

Congratulations, Staples, for getting this done. There were a LOT of upset owners with new USB to Serial converters who were stuck in 64bit land with no use for the hardware.

So, I hope all the writers of the 1-star ratings (now missing from the web reviews) will come back and visit and download the new drivers.

OK for dial-up modem, no good for faxing

Bought 2 USB Serial adapters to attach legacy external 56K modems to new 64bit PCs running Windows 7 Pro.The adapter was easy to set-up and the dial-up connection worked right away. Never was able though to get better than a 28K connection.Faxing was another story. After a week of futzing around with various Windows 7 fax software including Essential Fax and Snappy Fax, finally got the Microsoft program Windows Fax and Scan (WFS, bundled with Win 7 Pro) to send a fax "successfully". I put the word in quotes because even though WFS reported that the fax was sent successfully, the remote fax was never received. Tried many many times, to three different remote faxes (one standalone fax machine, one fax server, serveral other setups). Finally tried faxing to an identically configured Win 7 PC with the very same external 56K modem model connected with the same type of Staples USB Serial adapter and also using WFS. No joy!Bottom line: the fax attempt would often drop with "fatal errors" or with a message that the remote fax had failed to answer (even though I could hear the remote fax answering and sending tones). When the fax was "successful" it was either not received at all on the other end or received only in part i.e. missing lines or containing lines that were squeezed or truncated i.e. the top or bottom of each letter missing.Ended up keeping one USB Serial adapter for one PC to use for occasional dial-up and returning the other. Will eventually buy a USB faxmodem.BTW, I think the Staples 14 day return policy on tech stuff is way too draconian - not enough time to debug problems unless you have the luxury of working on nothing else for 2 weeks. Returns at Staples are easy though - as long as done within the pitifully paltry 14 days allowed.

This Adapter WORKS with Windows 8!

Pros

  • Easy to Use
  • Efficient
  • Quality Construction
  • Reliable
  • Works With Windows 8

Cons

  • Difficult To Set Up

Best Uses

  • Everyday Use

Comments about Staples USB-to-Serial Adapter:

This adapter definitely works with Windows 8 but you must follow all instructions when installing the driver and Windows does not have a driver for it. You may have to run the software twice and click "repair" the second time but when you get it, it is fast and accurate.

Purchased with the understanding that Windows 8 drivers would become available. Have checked six times since and am told they(?) are still working on. Even though I cannot use it, Staples will not accept return since more than 30 days have elapsed...although they still sell the item and the price remains the same!

I installed the software (successfully according to the installer) for this USB to Serial adapter on my MacBookPro OS 10.8.2. I could find nothing in the documentation on what /dev that this port will appear. Is there any Mac examples or documentation for this? Thanks sfm.

Unfortunately this adapter was originally developed for Windows 98, XP, Vista, and Windows 7 only so there are not any official Mac support documents available.

Yes, the Staples USB-to-Serial Adapter will connect to any device with a 9 pin serial port. In order for the computer monitor to work with this USB-to Serial Adapter the operating system running on the computer must be either Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 only.

As per the manufacture Belkin, the RS232 'break' command seems to be a terminal service, so no this USB-to-Serial Adapter would not support for this is meant as a virtual serial port, not dos port. This USB-to-Serial Portable Adapter connects your notebook to all your serial devices, including your modem, digital camera, printer, PDA or Palm handheld, and GPS navigator.
