I fell in love with this machine the instant I took it out of the box. The brushed metal finish looks amazing, and feels very high-end to the touch. It's cold to the touch like metal, but I think there's plastic involved somewhere.

Upon turning this bad-boy on, I felt the speed difference between it and an i3, A6-8 processored machine. The fact that it includes 8GB of DR3 memory running at 1600Mhz Dual Channel is by far one of the best pluses. Intel's new 4000 series integrated graphics are GREATLY improved over the 3000 series. I can run WoW at next to highest settings with 30FPS, acceptable for everything except perhaps raids. (I do however have a good chillmat underneath)

The sound on this thing is outstanding. The included amplification and equalization software makes listening even to YouTube a pleasant experience.

The only complaint I have is regarding the Recovery disk options included with the new Lenovo lines. There is no longer the option to create your own DVD's for a full system restore, built into the machine. You can either create a system partition backup with the included OneKey software, or use Windows 8 to back up the recovery partition and hope that it works on a clean hard drive. The catch is, using Win8 factory restore backup option REQUIRES a USB Flash Drive or other USB device that can hold at least 20GB of information. The website (and application) says 16GB, but that is not true. I've tried, and it hangs at 16. (It needs that extra 4 to complete)

All in all a great computer. The only reason I'm not too upset about the whole recovery option is, 1. The computer doesn't really come with anything that isn't already backed up on the "D" partition by default. (Drivers, and programs)
2. The computer only comes with Windows 8, not Windows 8 Pro edition. So I would be interested in buying an OEM just to have that - since it costs about as much as an upgrade disk.

This computer was purchased for business use. Upon trying to set it up, I experienced the "blue screen of death" and called Lenovo. After restoring computer to original state failed to fix problem, I agreed to ship it to Lenovo for repair. I was promised I would get computer back in 7 days. After 2 weeks, I still do not have the computer. Trying to get useful information from customer service is futile and frustrating. No one can tell me what is being done or when I can expect the computer returned. The website status is not kept up to date and is more misleading than helpful. I have been satisfied with Lenovo ThinkPads in the past but I will never buy another Lenovo computer based on this ordeal!

Comments about Lenovo Ideapad Z580-59345254 15.6" Laptop:

When I first started this system I thought I had purchaced an tablet. I was looking at Icons that was called apps. Where did my start menu go? Oh there is a desktop icon, When I clicked on it I was on a windows desktop but wait where is the start button and menu? There is no start button. So I googled for one and found this one, ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/ ) It was free and works great. Windows 7 Operating system was not available for this laptop Is what I was told. That is not a problem as I build and work on desktop computers and could replace the Operating System with Windows 7 if I did not like windows 8. I have to tell you I thought that would be the first thing I did after reading all the reviews. I was wrong and very pleased with Windows 8. Like any new OS you have to get used to it. Try it you will like it.

Comments about Lenovo Ideapad Z580-59345254 15.6" Laptop:

After reading all the reviews for Windows 8 I had my doubts that I would be keeping it on the system and replacing it with Windows 7. I thought when I first turned it on that I had bought a laptop that ws not a laptop but a tablet with a display screen that folded. I was very pleased to see I was wrong. It is both a laptop and a tablet. It started up in the tablet mode or as they call it in Windows 8 the start screen. there you have all the Icons called apps. I thought how do I load a program and after playing around a little I found the desktop Icon and clicked it an WaLa my missing desktop minus the start button the only thing I found wrong with Windows 8. I googled start button for win 8 and solved that problem. The only con was that when looking at the display form the side you lose the image and have to look more direct at the screen. It is not as bad in the dark as it is outside in sunlight. I can live with that. The system is very fast I hope it stays that way.

Comments about Lenovo Ideapad Z580-59345254 15.6" Laptop:

This is my first 15" laptop in a while. Slightly smaller screen is a challenge, but I like the portability.

I have to have a numeric keypad for productivity, but this keypad has a single-wide zero key on it. Almost every full-size keyboard and adding machine have a double-wide zero. You have NO IDEA how many times I'm hitting the right arrow for a zero. I'm sure that I'll get used to it, but almost 2 weeks in, and I'm only slightly better at hitting the correct key.

I like the feel of the keyboard. The curved keys are very comfortable.

This isn't the laptop's fault, but I didn't realize how much of a difference 2" made to remote work (working on client machines remotely). I am FOREVER scrolling now - and just figuring out which scroll bar is the 'active' one is a challenge. Again, I could hook up a larger monitor if I had room, but I don't, so I'll adapt. Just something that I hadn't thought of. The laptop seems sturdy (thus far).

It is definitely good value for the money.

I bought this laptop last week and i am using it for a week now. Bought it from staples for 499 and it is definitely value for money. I didn't find this configuration (I5 processor , 8 GB RAM) for this anywhere. Windows 8 seems to be created with tablets in mind, so it will take sometime to get yourself familiarized. Keypad is good with lot of space between the keys, which makes typing easier and the clickpad is a touchpad which is stylish. Overall, value for money.

I have kept my laptop plugged in since I received it right around Christmas 2012. When I hover over the batter symbol it says 88% available (Plugged in, not charging) is this normal or is there a possible issue with the battery or power cord?
Asked on 1/24/2013 by Lisa Marcoux from Roxboro, NC

          2 answers

          • A:

I don't know if 88% is correct, but Lenovo has a energy management application built in. If you open this Lenovo power management application, it allows you to select "Optimize for run time" or "Best Battery Health". When "Best Battery Health" is selected, and the laptop is connected to AC power, the battery is allowed to discharge partially. On my Z570 laptop, it discharges to 49% and stays there. When the cursor is placed over the tray icon, it says "49% available - plugged in, not charging" and stays at 49% as long as it is plugged in. This prevents overheating of the battery. Choosing "Optimize for run time" allows the battery to charge to 100%. I wish my Toshiba laptop had this feature.

          • A:

There are numerous reasons why this could be happening -a bad battery, bad cord, overcharging, BIOS update may be needed, battery may need to be re-calibrated... Your best bet, especially since you just received the computer is to contact the manufacturer and take advantage of your warranty - it may be a simple problem but you may be able to get a brand new battery if yours is defective, but do it while the machine is under warranty!
