This tablet is amazing. I have been using it for over 3 weeks and I am amazed at its speed and functionality.

I am typing this right now from the TOSHIBA ENCORE, using a Logitech K810 bluetooth keyboard and the tablet plugged into a 40" display at 1920x1080.

I have made this little machine my main computer, the only tablet on the market right now with HDMI out, without HDMI, these tablets are nothing more than toys.

Easy desktop machine, plug in the USB power and HDMI, turn on your keyboard/mouse and you are all set.

ONE COMPLAINT, only ONE USB port and its used by the power. Like I said, you can operate just fine with BLUETOOTH keyboard/mouse and great they included the HDMI. But pretty stupid not to give 2 USB ports, one for power and one for expansion.

STORAGE: I bought the 32GB version and it came with 11GB free on the internal drive. I couldnt even install Star Trek Online or EVE ONLINE, not enough storage. I installed a 64GB Micro-SD, problem solved. However, be aware that all METRO STORE APPS install to the internal drive, so far this has not been a problem. I even tried hacking the registry to change the save location for the metro store, without success.

GAMES: Amazing as it is, this device will play modern games at low settings. Touch screens are no good for PC games though, so plan on getting a keyboard/mouse.

VIDEO: 1080P video plays beautifully on this device, even though it reduces the resolution to the native 1280x800, 1080P plays great through the HDMI.

AUDIO: The built in speakers are good. The audio out is better than my laptop and the beam forming microphones... Well, my friends on Teamspeak say that it sounds like I am in their room.

DISPLAY: The display is relatively low res at 1280x800, compared to the average tablet display of today, before I bought the tablet, I wished it had 1080p. However after using it at 1280x800 res, there is a very good reason for the lower resolution. Windows 8.1 is NOT designed for tiny screen, or should I say, the applications you run in windows 8, are not designed for small screens. You will have difficulty touching tiny pull down menus and such, even at this lower resolution.

That being said, I cant see pixels, so 1280x800 and the IPS display is beautiful. There is one area on my unit that is slightly lighter on a black screen, but its barely noticeable.

FURTHER STORAGE EXPANSION. I purchased an inexpensive WIFI ROUTER with USB SHARE PORT, so now I have access to a 2TB hard drive for media through a hot swap-able hard drive USB dock.

WiDi: Useless. I purchased a Beklin WIDI adapter, it lost connection regularly, and when connected, it left artifacts on the screen, even with the tablet a few inches from the receiver. Not only that, if you are looking at one of the other tablets with the idea of using WiDi as a computer monitor, DONT! The widi adapters, even when working properly, have HORRIBLE latency, move your mouse, pointer moves a second later... WiDi is for streaming video and nothing more.

HDMI: Unless you are going to use this as a toy you carry around to show off to your friends, don't buy DELL or LENOVO, this is the only 8" Windows tablet on market at present, with HDMI.

WINDOWS 8.1: THIS IS THE SAME OS THAT YOUR LAPTOP AND DESKTOP COMPUTER RUNS, NOT THAT RT GARBAGE. Install just about anything you would on your desktop and put it in your back pocket.

SIZE: This literally fits in my back pocket, no problem. I wont carry a device that I cant fit in my pocket. If you want to carry stuff in a bag, get a high end laptop with a large screen, massive hard drive and real video card... simple.

START UP: This device goes to sleep mode when you press the power button, it wakes up as fast as any modern tablet running a pretend OS. But what is amazing is that the device COLD boots in about 5 seconds, that is FROM COMPLETELY TURNED OFF TO LOGIN. The fastest machine I have ever owned. This beats my android phone by about a minute, on cold boot!!!

This was my choice of new 8" bay trail tablets. I wantdd one with good sound and also hdmi output. This tablet has dual dolby speakers which other tablets do not. However, the sound is not very good and very quiet. The dell venue 8 pro blows it out of the water. The screen also is fsirly poor. You can see little squares in the screen. It is better than the W3 but not nearly as good as the venue or miix2. It is also the biggest and heaviest of the new tablets. If you absolutely must have hdmi then this is your only option. If you do not then there are much better tablets out there.

Comments about Toshiba Encore WT8-A32 8", 32GB Tablet:

I purchased this as a replacement for a Kindle Fire. After researching and reading reviews I found that this had a good reputation for quality, performand and ease of use. I was looking for something more versatile and have found it in this tablet. I love the Windows 8 platform and found it very easy to use out of the box. The system syncs information between it and my laptop also on Windows 8 platform. I have had some issues with connecting to the internet and am still working through those issues, That is the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5.

    No "Flaws"

    By Robert

Comments about Toshiba Encore WT8-A32 8", 32GB Tablet:

I have yet to encounter any of the "flaws" mentioned in the negative reviews...after installing Version 1.6 of the BIOS, then the Intel Platform Installer (for updated drivers), and then the Windows updates. The first two can be found on the Toshiba Encore WT8 Support web site. The tablet shipped with the original BIOS Version 1.2 installed. As of March 2014 the BIOS should be at least Version 1.6, possibly higher by now. The tablet should be plugged into the charger during the entire update, and not turned off until the update is totally complete. The Windows update will take a while (there were 44 updates when I did mine). Plan an hour for that.

The Encore synced quickly and easily with my other Windows devices (towers, laptops, windows phone etc.) via the free Microsoft account.

I use the free-for-non-commercial-use TeamViewer mobile app from the Windows store to remotely control my desktop from all mobile devices. That puts desktop programs on the mobile screen without using any mobile HDD space. The desktop with all of its RAM does the heavy work while instantly streaming the results to the tablet and cloud. Full versions of legacy Windows programs can be loaded onto the tablet if desired, however, since this OS is a complete version of Windows 8.1, but loading programs to the tablet isn't necessary in order to use the tablet to manipulate programs remotely.

For those who want detailed instructions, the expanded user manual is available by clicking the Toshiba tile on the Start menu. Windows touchscreen tutorials are available on the MS website, and YouTube.

After plugging in the charger press the top left button to turn the unit on. If the battery was really low the button needs to be pressed and held for 5 seconds, otherwise a simple tap will do.

For those of use with fat fingers the screen works well with a stylus. Bundles of stylus, faux leather case with Encore openings for the cameras, and a car charger can be had for under fifteen USD.

    Pros (After updates installed):

    1. Startup from cold off is 5 seconds.

    2. A big plus with this tablet is the HDMI port. Few 8" tablets have it. Connection to a TV requires an HDMI V1.4 cable, with an HDMI Male A on one end and a Micro HDMI Male D on the other (about four USD). To test the output I initially used an adapter on a V1.4 A/A HDMI cable, but that puts a lot of leverage stress on the tablet's port. Netflix movies streamed without any interruption via 802.11n. I've had no dropped connections at distances of 60 feet through multiple drywall. A good 802.11n router is the key. The HDMI video and sound worked beautifully to a 22" Vizio, a 42" Hannspree, and a 60" Vizio. The TVs were automatically detected, optimum resolution was automatically selected, and dual screens were shown allowing touch screen input to the tablet.
PLEASE NOTE: The Encore requires a V1.4 cable. Older V1.3 cables that worked fine on DVDs do not allow the necessary communication between the Encore tablet and the TV. My tablet initially wouldn't detect the 42" Hannspree or 60" Vizio LCD TVs. Thinking that odd, I swapped the HDMI cable from the 22" Vizio to the other two and everything worked fine. Fortunately, I had three TVs and a half dozen HDMI cables, one of which was a V1.4 cable, to play with or I might have blamed the tablet for the problem.
    3. This is the only Windows 8" tablet that I have seen so far with integral GPS (actually GNSS, which means that it will work in most countries, not just on the US GPS system). Click on the "Maps" app to see your location. If that doesn't work, make sure that GPS is "on" in the settings menu (it should be "on" by default, as is WiFi and bluetooth). Swipe down with one finger from the top of the screen to request directions for a driving route. Other Windows Store apps, like "Here Drive" for restaurants, shopping, and hotels, work too. Having a Windows PC and smartphone helped with familiarity of use on these apps.

    4. The 2 MP front camera is optimized for Skype HD video. The 8 MP back camera takes impressive photos.

    5. For those of us who do not carry purses: This tablet fits any of my pants pockets, front or back. In its leather case it will still fit my front pockets.

    6. Processing works well with the Intel Atom quad core Z3740 1.33 GHz processor (burst frequency of 1.86 GHz), and 2 GB of low power consumption LPDDR3 RAM, but as expected inputs can't be pushed as fast as processors with triple the speed and RAM.

    7. The IPS (In Plane Switching) 1280 x 800 screen video quality is excellent at any viewing angle.

    8. The Encore can stream wirelessly via bluetooth to a bluetooth enabled TV. I have an Ezcast M2 HDMI wireless miracast dongle adapter for projection to non-bluetooth TVs, but the HDMI cable works best for streaming.

    9. Stereo audio from the tablet is clear, and loud enough to hear in a bedroom size room.

    10. The "Gorilla glass" screen is rugged enough for adult use without a protective film.

    11. Battery life is about 8 hours. Go into settings (by swiping the right side of the screen) to change power drain options such as bluetooth, GPS, screen brightness, etc.

    12. The Encore charges using the supplied USB cable plugged into the supplied 5V 2A wall charger, at a rate of about 1% per 2 minutes of charging ie. 30% per hour of initial charging to a discharged battery. Top-off takes longer. The car charger that came with my leather case/charger bundle designed for the Encore is 5V 1.5A. (phone chargers may only be half amp).

    Cons:

    1. The Encore does not charge when plugged into a tower/laptop (for data transfer etc). This is the only "what were they thinking" design mistake, but with 8 hours of battery life it isn't a huge problem. Fortunately the HDMI port does enable streaming from the tablet while the tablet is being charged via the USB port.

I'm being a little picky on the next two "cons:"

    2. The on/off button is a little too close to the top left corner of the tablet when the tablet is held horizontally. I'm right handed, so I hold the tablet in my left hand. Keeping my left index finger from bumping the button took some getting-used-to. If the button were a half inch farther to the right that wouldn't be a problem. Bumping the button only blacks the screen, however. Another tap instantly brings it back to where it was (this isn't an issue when the tablet is in its leather case).

    3. One quirk to be aware of: I found that the power status window indicated battery status/charging status only at the time the status window was opened. If something changed, like plugging or unplugging the charger after opening the status window, the new charging status wasn't reflected until the window was closed and reopened.

Comments about Toshiba Encore WT8-A32 8", 32GB Tablet:

I received the product. First, in order to set it up, we had to pay an extra fee or set up ourselves. I had hoped the set up would be mostly complete on purchase. My wife is by far the best technician. She started work on the tablet and spent the better part of 3 hours. We finally gave up after disappointment after disappointment trying to make the camera work. The front camera would take pictures, but viewing it was extremely difficult. We finally after all these problems took the tablet to the store to agree to the set up fee. I told Matt, a very nice employee, our problem. He checked and the camera, which was my main purpose in buying the product, was in fact faulty. he then cleared all my personal information and I returned it. I lost the $25 coupon unless I wanted the hassle of returning it my self.
